R21 rear seat cushions

Has anyone made a modification to the rear seat back cushions to keep them from rolling under the railing? I had some thoughts of a mid rail between the hull and top rail where you velcro them on. Just wanted to see if anyone else had a good idea here. Winter project planning 😀

Redtug, I don't use my cushions due to the fact I spend most of my time fishing. I bought some floor mats from Costco, the big ones about 1inch thick and cut them to fit on aft locker, on deck going into the cabin and in the cabin. Easy to clean and looks great. I do have a full set of cousins but only use them on special occasions. Bob

We have the rear canvas setup on out 21EC and last year did not use the canvas. With the frame folded down, the two outside rear seat back cushions can be fastened to the frame, which is enough lower so they don't slide under it. The cushions install far enough further toward the centerline so that the center cushion can be dispensed with. There is the added benefit of making the seat bottom area shallower and more comfortable.

As far as modifying the stern rail, It would be fairly easy to put in several new vertical tubes from deck up to the horizontal rail, using deck fittings like the present ones and rail fittings they sell that will clamp over the existing rail at the top.

The existing setup really is a poor design. You end up with the cushions pushed under the rail and the rail pushed into your back.

Bracing the back cushions at the rear seat is easy to do so the back cushions don't push backwards. I purchased a white 2" wide PVC trim board at Home Depot. Cut it to about 5' length and, using zip ties in an X pattern, lashed it to the railing uprights at the stern of the boat. It prevents the back cushions from being pushed too far back. I had to trim the board's length so it does not interfere with my ability to insert a diesel fuel hose into the fuel tank opening when filling the fuel tank. Being white in color, it matches my white deck color and looks like it is part of the boat.
