Has anyone felt a need or actually cut ventilation holes in the aft compartment? Seems like it could use some ventilation back there and I thought I could add a couple to the forward face of the bench.

Hello Ron,

I've not cut holes yet. I usually prop the tops open to facilitate drying. Installing vents is a good idea as the aft compartment is generally wet.

Let us know what you end up doing.

Me too, guys. I would be interested to know what you suggest, as I too have thought that it could do with a bit more ventilation. Besides diesel fumes (while not excessive) there is usually a bit of moisture in there, especially after prolonged periods at sea and/or after heavy rain while on the trailer in my driveway. I usually leave one of the 'lids' open during the day to get the benefit of sunshine and fresh air. Admittedly, there is some venting on the port, aft gunwale, via the originally designed fuel tank vent which was never connected to the fuel tank. This does allow fumes and moisture to escape, I guess, but there is always room for improvement. Keen to see what you guys do. Regards, Stevan

Thanks for the responses. I will have to look for what might be the best way to go. Sailboats always seem to have decent locker ventilation. It seems like there ought to be a better way than propping the lid open.

Hello Ron,

An alternative to venting the space might be to keep it dry/drier. Somewhere on this site, in the photo albums, a guy made a sunbrella fabric cover to go over the aft bench to shield it from rain...like when the boat is sitting on the trailer out in the open.

On the other hand installation of actual vents addresses the problem and potentially fixes it.
Here are a few examples of Sea Dog Stainless steel flat louvered vents from Jamestown Distributors:

Perhaps a combination of the larger, 5" x 9" size would work without weakening the forward partition where they are placed?
