Jim:
Back in 2009 when considering our R-25 (Classic) purchase I hesitated to include the Autopilot option. I posted to this forum as you have, and the response from everyone without exception was to get the Autopilot and to have it installed by the factory and calibrated by them during the initial sea trial.
My intent was that our anticipated cruising would be quite extensive with motoring for many hours at a time over long distances, and sometime in unfamiliar waters.
I thought about maybe installing an Autopilot myself later on after convincing myself we needed it. However, installing the Autopilot at a later date can be done but is generally ill-advised.
One of the best features of the Garmin Autopilot is it's option for computing a 'safe course' for you to your destination. This is immensely satisfying and a real time saver when setting off on a long cruise. Also, I can tell you that using the Autopilot during rough waters, following seas where the boat is yawing and sliding constantly and beam side winds is hugely easier and less tiring than manual steering. I just cannot over emphasize this point as I've compared this issue with and without using Autopilot.
Look at this way; the cost of the Autopilot is around 4.5% of the R-23's base price + taxes.
Personally, having owned the R-25 (Classic) and R-21EC, both with Autopilot I strongly would advise anyone to opt for the Autopilot at purchase time.
N.B. If you are going to use the R-23 just as a run-about on a lake, then the Autopilot would be a waste of money, unless you want to consider a better / quick 'resale'. The Autopilot will appeal to far more potential buyers.
Good luck with your decision.
P.S. I'm likely to be buying the R-23 outboard soon and there will be no hesitation on my part for not including Autopilot.
