Hi,
I am considering getting a R23 and I was wondering which autopilot the factory is using on the R23, and why does it cost so much? I would like to have autopilot on the boat, I just find it hard to justify spending that much money for one.
Thanks,
Jim

The cost is worth it. I also have the remote. It comes in very handy when you are cruising and the sun is beating down on the helm side. I switch to port and and steer using the remote. On long trips having the autopilot does make a difference. I would skimp on something else that can be easily installed later before I would eliminate autopilot.

Hey there Jim,

We are using Garmin's reactor pilot with the GHC 20 control head. As you see, Mike is a big fan and that is typical to the ones that own or have used auto pilots. The ones that have not used auto pilots can't justify the cost and the only reason is they are not aware of what they are missing. 😀

I think it all depends on how you plan on using the boat. I have many friends with outboards and no one has an autopilot however they mainly go out fishing, point A to point B. Myself with the 25 I have done some extensive trips and I wouldn't be without it. The autopilot gives you the freedom to set the course, sit back and be the lookout. It will also give the boat more resale value and appeal when you decide to move up in the Ranger family.
I'm with Mike, get the A.P. (easy for us to spend your $$) 😀

We just took delivery of our new R-27 this past week and put it in the water this past Sunday. We have never owned a boat with AutoPilot before so this was all new to us. We cruised up and down the river for about 6 hours and I can happily say I will never buy a boat WITHOUT AutoPilot again. It really is the best thing since sliced bread, and well worth the extra $$$ in my opinion.

Jim:

Back in 2009 when considering our R-25 (Classic) purchase I hesitated to include the Autopilot option. I posted to this forum as you have, and the response from everyone without exception was to get the Autopilot and to have it installed by the factory and calibrated by them during the initial sea trial.

My intent was that our anticipated cruising would be quite extensive with motoring for many hours at a time over long distances, and sometime in unfamiliar waters.

I thought about maybe installing an Autopilot myself later on after convincing myself we needed it. However, installing the Autopilot at a later date can be done but is generally ill-advised.

One of the best features of the Garmin Autopilot is it's option for computing a 'safe course' for you to your destination. This is immensely satisfying and a real time saver when setting off on a long cruise. Also, I can tell you that using the Autopilot during rough waters, following seas where the boat is yawing and sliding constantly and beam side winds is hugely easier and less tiring than manual steering. I just cannot over emphasize this point as I've compared this issue with and without using Autopilot.

Look at this way; the cost of the Autopilot is around 4.5% of the R-23's base price + taxes.

Personally, having owned the R-25 (Classic) and R-21EC, both with Autopilot I strongly would advise anyone to opt for the Autopilot at purchase time.

N.B. If you are going to use the R-23 just as a run-about on a lake, then the Autopilot would be a waste of money, unless you want to consider a better / quick 'resale'. The Autopilot will appeal to far more potential buyers.

Good luck with your decision.

P.S. I'm likely to be buying the R-23 outboard soon and there will be no hesitation on my part for not including Autopilot.

I was on the fence about the Auto pilot when purchasing our R-23. I' m so glad I decided to go with it. Works as advertised and with the Garmin Vision card it sets the route for you.

Thank you for all your inputs. My initial use for the first 2 years will be exploring the Maine seacoast, and the various lakes around New England. When SWMBO retires, we plan on doing the ICW, ME to FL, not sure if we will do the full Loop. I don't doubt the usefulness of the AP, although she doesn't think one is necessary. I see list prices on units between $500 and $8000 and it makes me wonder what one is getting for the $$$$. Local dealer is telling me that if I ordered a 23 now... I wouldn't get it until October, which is the end of our boating season. So I have a bit of time to decide, I would order in time to get the boat for next spring.

As long as she agrees to pilot the boat when ever you are tired or have to be occupied doing something else then have her sign that agreement and don't get one.

On the same note; having done a lot of cruising in Maine, your autopilot may be best left off with having to navigate around all those lobster posts in season.

Hi MooseLanding,
I took a ride on your 21 with Chris, I found it too slow for my needs. Like I told Chris, let me know when your 23 is in the water and I will come back up for a ride on it.
