Every time I walk up to my boat I smell fuel. Wondering if this is normal and if everyone else has the same. Starboard side, Stern end of the boat.

I know the vent is located there but am wondering if I should always smell it?

Jim

Jim I would want to sniff that issue out for sure. You should not be smelling fuel fumes.

Are you sure there's not another boat nearby that maybe the fume smell is coming from ?

Is this only when we have warm/hot weather ?

Is your boat in a covered slip or not ?

How full is your fuel tank when you smell the fuel fumes ?

Are you carrying extra fuel in containers onboard by chance ?

Are you sure it's gasoline you smell as apposed to diesel fumes ?

I believe the fuel tank has two vents; one at the filler port and another that has a charcoal filter in the line and exits out on port side.... (at least that's the case for my R-27/OB model)

I do not smell fumes at all and my tank is almost full at this time and is in a covered slip but the stern is exposed to sun and can get quite warm/hot on sunny days.

Hey Jim! We have never experienced this problem with our boat...Hope you can find out why you have this issue. If anyone can figure it out, it’s you! See you in July!

Jim: Has this issue suddenly happened. If you can determine when the 'smell' started that might give you a clue as to its source.

Any floating sheens on the water surface around your boat ?

Have you filled your fuel tank recently ?

A fuel smell can be coming from a 'far away' place if there's a slight breeze. Walk about to other boats nearby and see if the fuel smell is stronger than at your boat. If the smell originates across the fairway between your dock and the far side and the fuel smell is coming from there this will be tough issue to determine the source.

Any time you smell fuel it's important to understand where it's coming from ASAP.

Every now and then I stick my head down into the center cockpit stowage space where the aft section of the fuel tank sticks out some and check for fuel smell as a check for any leaks etc.

Is your boat rocking some ? This may cause some venting activity at the fuel filler and/or the filtered vent on port side.
