Hello all I am eagerly awaiting delivery of my new R23. I have been watching lots of videos on YouTube including videos produced by the company itself. Here is something curious: the Ranger tug website lists the boat as a little bit more than 28 feet. The exact same measurements of the 25 but at least one Ranger video says it is 23 feet.

I don’t really care because I’ve seen the actual boat, but I’m curious about this discrepancy. I am assuming that the difference is the transom?

Also, I am curious what other people shocked against the Ranger line. I found the Merry Fisher line to be most comfortable thoughts on that?

Interesting as we are awaiting the delivery of our new 23 as well and I was wondering much the same.

Any boat has multiple lengths depending on what you're measuring. It can be 23' for the length of the hull in the water, or 25' with the rear platform, 28' with the motors in the water and 29' almost 30' with the motors up. And add a bit more for the pulpit depending on the anchor.

The key is to figure out which length you need to consider for which purpose. For a slip, the extreme length overall (ELOA) is the one you usually want to know and also that you would usually pay for, if a marina measures. But for USCG register, trailer length, or other purposes, then shorter lengths would be relevant. For example, USCG documentation length is that of the molded hull at its extremes, not counting add on platforms, but irrespective of waterline.

Maybe that reduces clarity but is why there are so many measurements.

Bottom line. At the bar or golf club with your buddies, it’s a 28 foot yacht, but when the tax man comes by, it’s only a little 23 foot pocket cruiser.
