On our 2018 R-23 there isn’t a factory installed bilge pump in the V- berth area. There is a shower sump pump inside a sealed compartment under the step outside the head designed to empty water when you use the shower. This pump should only function when you use the shower and water drains into the container under the step. The pump will discharge the water through the port opening. Two bilge pumps are located in the center lazaret, one forward and one aft. The aft sump pump checks for water in the bilge about every 2 minutes and if water is detected it will run until the water is pumped out. The forward bilge pump will operate automatically if water reaches the sensor. Both of these pumps can be activated manually but should only be used if there’s water present. You should never run a pump for any extended time if no water is present. Most R-23 owners also have a bilge pump in the rear engine pod but these pumps have been an issue and many have stopped working. The factory has recommended the original hatch opening in the engine pod be changed to a water tight Armstrong cover. If you seal the screw holes from the factory hatch with silicone and then use the Armstrong cover most of your water intrusion issues will be resolved.
