I have found a $3 (Canadian -- about $.75 USA, I guess) solution to protect the "fur" on the outside wall between the stove and the rack over the porthole.

Buy 3 12" x 15" flexible white translucent chopping mats, the nylon kind that are a bit thicker than paper. The ones that you can roll up. Loosen the screws on the window frame and the two on the shelf. Stuff them (portrait, not landscape) under the window frame and behind the shelf. You need 3 -- one forward, one aft and the 3rd overlaps those two with about a 1.5" overlap at each joint. They blend in so well you actually don't even notice them and you can splatter to your hearts content. I tried getting away with 2 (landscape) but there just wasn't enough material to stuff under the window and the shelf, so I spent the third dollar.
