Has any one with the Cummins 150hp used Delo 400 oil in their motor?

I've only used Cummins mechanics for oil changes to date. Does anyone have a step by step method for changing the oil in their Cummins? I'm going to start doing in myself.

Thanks

Don't let anyone confuse you, any quality, diesel rated oil will do the job - look for the rating , CJ4 ...
Get the best price you can find and forget about brand...
Now having said that, I tend to be partial to Rotella-T 15W40... I use it in the boat, and the tractor, and the back hoe and the bulldozer, etc... I buy it in larger quantity for the price break...

As far as changing your own oil and filter, you should... No one will care as much about your engine as you will... Get the filters from Andrew (do NOT go to a Cummins dealer, they will rape you)... Put a hook and eye on the step so it will stay in the up position while you work... Remove the front board under the step - 4 screws... Now you have room to work...
I have a suction pump for removing the oil - found at auto stores, West Marine, etc.. It has a scavenge tube that slips down inside the dip stick tube... This works best with the boat on the trailer so you can get it nose down slightly to scavenge the most oil - but will work in the water with the stern low, you just don't remove all the oil (no biggie)... The savings from your first oil change will pay for the suction pump...

Any questions, just ping this group...

cheers

The newer models might have a hose off the bottom of the pan. The Lucky Fin has a garden hose attachment.

There is a difference in oil. Most truckers use Rotella 10 40. For a good reason. In many cases it will increase your oil pressure by 10 psi.

I previously had 2 diesel tractors for over 20 years. When I recently replaced them with 2 newer larger models the original diesel engines ran as new. I also have my R25 & a diesel truck and 2 small stationary diesel engines. All I have ever used is Rottella T 15W40 and never a problem. Good thisn because it is so easy to get locally (Walmart & Sams)

We once before had a discussion about oils and as an old oil company salesman I will say again that if the oil meets the specs of the manufacturer it is approved for that use. There many good oils, I have used Delo and Rotella which are both very good. I recently talked to MER Equipment in Seattle, a Yanmar distributer, about what they use and they said Delo 15W-40. I would always use a multi-grade as the operating temperature range is greater. My boat from Ranger came with a sythetic oil which I think is overkill as this is designed for extended oil changes which would void the warranty of the manufacturer. I am going to change to Delo 15W-40 at my next oil change, a personal decision. Valvoline, Quaker State and Penzoil also make an excellent product for marine use. Have a great boating season.

Availability has been one big consideration for me. Wall Marts and all truck stops and Bahamas. Mexico. I at one time used Delo 400 and 100.

I disagree that all oils with the same rating are the same. At one time in my working life I owned 50 patrol cars. New ones. An oil company came by and gave us a demonstration on oil . We went for it. To make a long story short. We blew up several brand new engines. One point I must make is all were converted to propane, but it was the oil that caused the problem. That is why I took some lessons from an expert.
I have had numerous diesels over the years in heavy equipment as well a pickups and several 8 V 71 detroits. In a bus and in a boat. Ash content was a consideration on the 2 strokes. Texico was one of the few oils that met the spec requirements.

Opinions on oil are like butts, everyone has one. Just expressing mine. 😉
