I want to upgrade my Claw anchor to a Rocna. Has anyone tried the Rocna 15 kg anchor on a Ranger 27? It looks like it's probably too big for the roller / bow. I've seen lots of Rocna 10 kg anchors on the R27, and they look good.

Also, I am considering going to a "plait" or braid for the anchor rode. I use New England Ropes 5/8 "Mega Braid" on my other boat and it stows very nicely. Has anyone used this on their R27? How does it work with your windlass?

There is also a "Mega Braid II" that is supposed to be more chafe-resistant. Can anyone compare this to the Mega Braid? How does it stow, and does it work with the windlass?

Thanks,
Paul / R27 Maggie E

I found the Rocna 10 KG to be a significant improvement over the stock anchor on my 27. I just happen to have said anchor for sale. I am in Elliott Bay until Thursday when we will move to Anacortes. Make me an offer, I am asking $225.

I tend to go overkill. I had the 15 kg Rocna. It worked great, but had a recall and I switched to the Manson Supreme, same size. Rocna corrected their issue. If you go with the 15 you just have to move the launch out to the second set of holes. If you go with the Manson you have to change the bale to a taller bale since the Manson shank is deeper. I also use 8 plait rode. It lays nice and flat, but you still need to be at the bow to lay it in and prevent the chain from building up. The locker is a little shallow. I have 30 feet of chain and 200 feet of rode. We do sleep well at night while on the hook. 😀

I am using a Rocna 15 on Unzipped³ - a R27. I had to move the tilting arm of the anchor roller to the second set of holes. It clears the bow when launching and retrieving.

I found that a Rocna 15 kg is a significant improvement over the 10kg on my R-27. The 10 kg is okay for most situations but the 15 kg is most reassuring when the wind picks up. Further, I found that the 15 kg sets faster than the 10 kg. Previously, when I was using the 10 kg , I occasionally had the to make a couple of tries to get the anchor firmly set into the bottom. I made no adjustments to the bow roller when changing from the original claw to the 10 kg Rocna and then to the 15 kg Rocna.

Just for the record, my new 15kg/33# Rocna fit on my stock R-29S anchor roller without any modifications.
