Hi all. On our R27 there is a foot rest at the helm but not on the inboard side of the first mate's seat. The landing at the far (port) side of the seat is at sufficient height so a foot rest is not necessary but the inboard passenger's feet are dangling in the air. The first mate is not happy with this and wants a foot rest. The helm foot rest is too wide to fit in this space.

I have inquired to Richard at Ranger Tugs regarding available foot rests from the factory. No word back yet. I am thinking of alternatives including a fold out shelf or something like that.

Anyone else dealt with this or have ideas?

Curt

I have installed a "Garelick Adjustable Footrest", model 27516. Garelick sells several other models. First Mate finds the rest very useful. The rest is very simple to install.

Osprey, since the space is only 10.5" wide and the Garelick foot rest is 15" wide did you mount the Garelick above the landing height to get the extra room?

Curt

Yes. I posted an image in my Osprey album. See Img_0232.

I used the Garelick foot rest and cut it to reduce the length so when it folds out it's level with the fiberglass landing so there's no tripping. Folds nicely out-of-the-way. Measures about 10 and three-quarter inches overall length

The Yanmar parts box works well laid on its side. The orange water tight storage boxes that are sold at WM would also work. No drilling required. 😀

ALICE J,

That sounds like a reasonable option. Did you modify the Garelick footrest that Osprey used (adjustable with curved metal front) or did you use the rectangular non-adjustable one they offer? The curved one looks like a challenge to modify.

I agree that the Garelick step I installed in "Osprey" could not readily be shortened. After 3 years of use we have not had a single trip or stumble incident due to this step. It is possible I suppose but is so unlikely that I have no concerns with respect to this issue.

Osprey,

Thanks for the info. I have a chart/magazine rack installed on the bulkhead wall that will interfere with this bracket at full length at that mounting height. Thus my desire to squeeze the footrest into the space above the step. I am considering mounting that footrest below the seat however. I don't think it would be as comfortable though. Still considering my options.

We had the factory install a passenger footrest when our R27 was built. Not sure it will work for you Curt, because of the magazine rack. But just in case our installation is helpful, to you or anyone else, I thought I'd get the photo posted. We really like being able to fold it up to have it out of the way when we don't need it. As I recall, the factory did some significant reinforcement on the back side of the bulkhead wall. It is plenty strong. I stand on it as needed (mostly to get the TV pushed back up to the ceiling, which requires some added leverage).

Yes, that is the one Ranger Tugs suggested to me. Since it will interfere with our magazine rack I am thinking of putting it on the wall under the seat instead.

To follow up on this discussion, I have posted photos of the selected foot rest in my album with a link below. This foot rest is similar to the one Ranger Tugs stocks but extends further out when folded down. It is from G.G. Schmitt and Sons. I chose this extended version because it is placed under the seat instead of on the bulkhead and the extended length is more comfortable here. This placement is to avoid the chart rack I also installed this winter on the bulkhead (see Red Raven modifications in our photo album).

Thanks to all for your input!

Curt
