Last year I added a cabinet/step to the floor area at the helm. As some of you know I have a 27.5 inch inseam and my R27 is built for Andrew. The only way I can access the helm seat easily is to use the wheel as a grab bar, which I do not do because I do not want to damage it. (The 29s and 31s have a properly positioned grab bar.) The cabinet I added last year, while it worked very well for me, blocked access to the electrical panels somewhat. For service the cabinet had to be removed completely. I have rebuilt this cabinet to address the problems with version 1.0. I re-installed the stock foot rest and added a shelf to it that raises the surface about 1.5 inches. Also makes it smooth and flat as I am barefooted more than not while on the boat. A small stool from Wal-mart extends the floor of the helm area without blocking the heater vent. A simple box cabinet is placed on the helm floor to raise it about 7 inches and rests slightly on the stool keeping it in place. By making the box about 17 inches wide, it leaves a space in front and behind that I use for storing our EarTec radios and log book.

Nice idea. Its a bit of a climb for me also.. My friend that will be doing the Erie Canal with me this coming Fall will need a stool or something to get into helm seat. A grab bar would also be good idea ! I stepped off seat one time not thinking. Was used to just stepping off the EC 21 seat heh heh. What a jolt.
