Hello! We’re looking to upgrade the factory Lewmar claw anchor on our 2025 R27. The current favorite is a Rocna MKII. Wondering if anyone has size and type experience for an anchor upgrade to aid in our search.

I’ve got pic's and such about upgrading to a Rocna 10 on our website.

Martin you’re the man! Thanks so much.

We have a Mantus snubber currently. Everything else on your website makes sense to me.

Do you think there’s any value in spending the extra $ on a Rocna MK2 9 instead of the original 10?

Appreciate it tremendously.

The Rocna Mk2 9 is twice the cost of the Rocna 10. We are quite happy with the Rocna10. Especially after we spent 2 nights waiting out weather in Glacier Bay, 15 knot winds, 75 feet of water, 250' of rode out... The Rocna10 held Lemondrop and Channel Surfing, no issues. We swung around, never had it drag.

I really like Ultraamarine's line of anchors too. Their UA12-26 I've looked at a lot. Only two issues with it. It's almost 4 times as expensive as the Rocna10 (they say it's filled with lead, I suspect it's actually gold). And being 316 stainless, I'd have to polish it, often. I still look at it every boat show. sigh.

I love our Rocna10. (Galvanized). I am also a firm believer in a good snubber and bridle. I use ours for overnighters, every time.

The thing with anchors, we are relational boaters. When it gets bad out, we run and hide somewhere. I need to be able to withstand a storm, but not a hurricane. The lewmar claw that came with the boat would drag several times as I tried to set it. Once set, it held fine. The Rocna 10 sets instantly and I've never had it drag.

One other anchor story that we never published....regarding strength.

On our SE Alaska trip, being tossed around in 2-4 foot seas in Johnstone Strait, my solar controller was smoldering (but we didn't know that then), we just smelled electrical burning. We pulled into Port Neville, an anchorage off Johnstone Strait. I dropped my anchor, set the Rocna 10 and put out some scope. The wind was at least 10 knots through the anchorage, as it was 26 knots in Johnstone Strait. Little Elsie, an R31 saw us on AIS and stopped by in the anchorage to say hi, not knowing what was going on. The photo of Little Elsie shows the sea state in the anchorage.

Annie Time (an R27-OB) came up and rafted to my starboard side. Lemondrop (an R27-OB) came up and rafted to my port side.
I tore my boat apart, looking for the source of the smell to try and identify what was burning (the smell was subsiding as the sea water had stopped falling down on the boat).

The Rocna10 on Channel Surfing held all three of us at anchor for over an hour as we troubleshot, re-grouped, and made our change of plans on how we were going to get around Johnstone Strait.

Vulcan is also a great anchor for the 27ob. It held 4 boats in addition to us in 15-20 knots, stern to no less. Full disclosure it was Quartermaster Harbor (shallow mud), but the other 4 boats were 40ft+.

Best real world test was rafting others several times on us in Pendrell Sound without a slip.

Scott, do you need any additional Mantus or other 3rd party items like anchor guard, etc with the Vulcan?

The Rocna and Vulcan are both great anchors made by the same company. The difference is how they fit the bow of the boat.

Here's a photo of the Vulcan and a Rocna on a R27.

We had a Vulcan 9 on our R23 and loved it. When we upgraded to the R27 I felt more comfortable with upsizing to the Vulcan 12 (after studying the Rocna/Vulcan Anchor sizing charts). Sets first time and holds great (I sleep very well at night!). I made an anchor guard/rest that keeps it away from the hull while deploying and holds it solid underway (I recommend an anchor rest). I also made a stainless tab to lock the pivoting bow roller into the highest position, keeping the anchor further away from the hull. The shape of the Vulcan doesn't require the pivoting action of the bow roller, very easy to deploy.V12 Anchor R27.jpg V12 Anchor R27 -2.jpg

did the Mantus anchor guard. works well but somehow I managed to bend it, repair underway as we speak

We've been very happy with our Rocna 10kg. We have a shackle attached to the anchor then a Mantus swivel attached to the shackle. The anchor stays just off the bow when secured.

Hey everyone, thanks for all of the great info. We went with a Rocna 9 (MKII); got it on sale, and it had a shorter delivery time than the Rocna 10 or Vulcan 12. We’re about 1/3 way into our great loop trip; excited to have an anchor upgrade now that we’re in tidal waters. We’ll post an install video on our YouTube channel in the next week or so. Planning to use the old Lewmar claw anchor as our stern anchor; interested to see if anyone has an opinion about that.

We bought a Vulcan 12 for our R27 OB and added a Mantus anchor guard. It was a tight fit and I added an adhesive bumper strip in the gap between the SS hull protectors--just where the tip of the anchor could touch the hull.

Watched your video on your anchor upgrade - the anchor looks good! We upgraded to a Vulcan 12 on our R27 OB. However, we needed to replace the original self-launching anchor roller with a Mantus ancho roller. We had enough room to add a Mantus swivel, as well. We are considering adding a Fortress for a stern anchor.
