Has anyone installed a rudder angle indicator on a R27 inboard?

We had a rudder indicator installed on our R29S inboard at the time of delivery. After counting revolutions from hard-over to center the 6 years we had our R25 inboard, I decided there had to a be a better way. I find it works well and is helpful especially in marinas.
The difficult thing is re-training my brain to glance at the screen to actually use it when in tight quarters trying to look at everything else around me.

S. Todd, mind saying what rudder angle indicator you installed, why you chose it, etc.? I have a 2021 R29S and am curious about doing the same.

I had the dealership install it before delivery and their electronics expert picked the particular brand. It reads on the bottom of our Garmin autopilot screen with a line that goes green to starboard or red to port. Boat is tarped in winter storage but I will attempt to get you more details and pictures if I can.

S. Todd. I am very interested in that info too!
Thanks you!

Rocky

I put one on my 2021 R31S. It's great to get you off the dock! We installed the Garmin GRF10. We have a "smart" pump and didn't need the GRA10 analog adapter. The indicator just plugs into the pump. Pretty easy...
BTW, I have a GRA10 adapter sitting in the barn......

I pulled the invoice on ours and it is the same as the one installed by zekeandboone: Garmin Rudder Feedback 10 (GRF10).
On our boat the rudder angle analog adapter is hooked to the rudder control arm at the inside stern of the boat and then gets plugged into the NMEA backbone which is how it reads on the autopilot screen at the helm. Our install was done by Quality Marine Electronics out of Zeeland, Michigan (qualitymarineelectronics.com).

Thanks to you both. Very helpful!

My indicator is turn the helm wheel if you are not going in the direction you want to go. When at a dock, before leaving, I look between the stern and swim step to make sure my rudder is straight and then when at the helm turn wheel accordingly.

When docking, I'm more concerned about watching the motion of the boat, angles of approach, crew (my wife), potential danger spots and am really really reluctant to let my eyes wander any where than the outside surroundings. Plus 2 and 1/2 turns from wheel center in either direction is not too difficult to keep track of or execute when needed. I mean, if I look at a rudder angle indicator and it is where I want it, but the boat is not, then I'm not sure what good it is doing other than distracting me from the task at hand. To each their own. Gary

Is a rudder angel indicator needed, NO. But you don't need thrusters to dock a boat or a fuel gage or the many other comforts that some of us have come to enjoy. If you don't have one you don't know what the extra knowledge of one is like. I have one on my boat and use it, it's just another tool to help me navigate

P.S. some of you sound like a wife trying to discourage spending money on the boat (do you really need it)

I’m acquainted with the OP. He is a long-time sailboater and has used a rudder position indicator on them. He is used to having one. I’ve seen him skillfully bring his Ranger Tug into a slip with a cross-current and inoperative thrusters. As Bob Daily suggests, a rudder angle indicator is a tool and not a crutch.
