I’m pretty sure you can’t retrofit the dinghy lift to a boat that wasn’t built with one at the factory. Lots of extra materials used to support the transom and swim step up for the lift.

In November 4th, 2020, Andrew said in response to a question about the R27/OB dinghy lift:
“ Hello,
I am sorry to say that this is only offered for the current version of the Ranger 27 outboard. Looks like it is time to upgrade! 😀

Perhaps production R27/OBs since the dinghy lift was introduced are beefed up to support it, even if not ordered initially in pre-production.
Andrew, would you mind clarifying this? Can you retrofit a dinghy lift on a R27/OB? If so, is there a production cut off date for doing the retrofit?

If the R27 is a 2021 model, the R27 will have the structure in place to support a dinghy lift. We started doing this on later 2020 models. It is about a six hour installation but we do have a guide in place on how to do this now. The hardest part is shipping the unit. I would work with a local dealer that has a boat coming in to ship the parts with. In regards to the structure, this is all powder coated aluminum.

We have a 27OB on order now with the dinghy lift, and I've been thinking about fishing with/around it. While I definitely want it for getting to shore with the dogs and exploring, I'm wondering how heavy is the lift itself, and is it easily removable if we were to spend a few days salmon fishing without dogs? Conversely I suppose it would be possible to troll with the lift down but I imagine the lines could get hung up on the davits pretty easily. Has anyone else tried fishing with the dinghy lift set up?
