Can someone indicate the composition of the R27's swim step fenders... are they inflatable or are they some kind of dense deformable foam similar to modern car bumpers ? Also, does Ranger provide fender colors other than black ? Thanks... 🙂

Barry,
These are inflatable. As for color, when you sit down to negotiate your purchase, work this into the deal. These are stock fenders that you can buy at all of the marine supply companies.

Tugnuts,

I am not confident that buyers can negotiate changes beyond the available options currently. The production crews seem to be very busy building boats for buyers who are eager to receive their boats, so customizing boats is not as easy as it may have been previously.

At the Points North Seminar today I asked both Andrew, Kenny and Capt. Mac who has a new R27 about these fenders. Andrew wasn't absolutely sure and nor was Kenny and said he did not recall seeing any place on these fenders that allowed them to be inflated so surmised they were air filled and sealed and were not dense foam as I was thinking they could be. Capt. Mac was unsure about them being inflatable or sealed units.

So the question appears to be unanswered at this time.

I did not enquire about color choices. 😉

I am beginning to wonder what difference does it make whether they are inflatable or dense foam filled. I guess if they ever go flat I will check to see if they can be inflated. As far as the color, mine are black, I have not seen any other color. Once when stern tied, a big wind came up during the night. I added two of my 8.5 inch black inflatable fenders at the stern as I did not feel comfortable with the small swim grid installed fenders to keep me from banging against the dock.

I even have a white inflatable 8.5 inch fender, because I got a good deal on it. It has come in handy a couple of times. One of my black fenders has stopped holding air. The valve does not work. I guess I will have to replace the fender as the valve is probably not replaceable. I will probably get another black one to match the others. My boat came with 4 8.5 inch inflatable fenders. I have added two more 8.5 inch black inflatable fenders for a total of 6, 3 on each side. The extra fender mid ship keeps the boat off the dock better. Many places in the Gulf have fixed piers with external pilings that you must fender off. So we have to put another line on the fender and place them horizontal. Not as civilized as the floating docks. Of course with only a 1 to 2 foot tide swing here, floating docks are not as necessary as they are in the North West.

Good night all, see you tomorrow.

Polyform FendersThese are what they use . Readily available . Inflatable. Black .
As you can see they make a number of colors. Your dealer should be willing and able to help with colors .

Thanks Marc! Another perplexing question has been answered! The boating world is now a safer place!

Thanks Marc.

Herb: I posted because I had experienced fenders deflating or at least getting too soft to be useful. It makes sense for those small swim step fenders to be "Polyform fenders" as that lessens their maintenance over time and the owner can know they will be useful when needed. I also have two large fenders secured to my dockside for when I stern in to protect my Pudgy yellow bottom as it's easy sometimes to nudge reverse too hard at times. Also I've added two additional black fenders to match the 4 Ranger provides with the purchase of a new boat.

Barry,
Like your car tires, you have to add air to your fenders in the winter.

David: I agree... I like any workable idea or a product that reduces my maintenance chores and if it/they provide improved safety, so much the better. 🙂

I just checked my fenders. They are Polyform, but I see nowhere on them where you can pot air in.

Thanks... that confirms what Andrew surmised at Points North Seminar.... 🙂
