Has any R29 owners added another Garmin screen to their dashboard? There is much available space. A nice 16 inch I would think functional...one screen focused on navigation the other on weather or engine metrics.

Absolutely - we ordered ours with dual screens from the factory and will never be sorry for it. Many viewing options, but the option I use the most is close view chart and the other distance view for planning , chart exploring, routing - etc... without losing my current location. We usually create our trip as we go. It also gives you 2 sidebars for engine and other information.

I have a 2015 and added a 8610xsv to the left. I drive active captain from it and charts from it and use the old 72xx for general info. PM me for pictures. I can’t get the album working.

Dfogal -

Thank you! Yes...I can view the photo.

Very nice setup.

I am going back and forth between Nordic Tug and Ranger Tug new purchase.

I am planning to live aboard the boat awhile.

Tim

Love the addition but my ocd can’t deal with the two different screen sizes 😀

I understand the OCD comment - but because the screens are set up for different purposes - it doesn’t seem to matter. If I had Chartplotter data on both ...

Unfortunately the new Glass Cockpit Garmin screens do not match the old form factor - so you have to deal with that somehow. Going bigger would allow you to cover the hole - but the cost goes up very quickly with the larger units.

If liveaboard is the goal - spend time on both and decide based on comfort. The 29S does not have any ‘lounge seat’ - so you need a comfy lawn chair. I’m happy on the Great Lakes with the Ranger Tugs but am careful. We have a lot of rivers and canals around here (part of Americas Great Loop) and the boat is perfect for all that. I’ve now been in 3-4’ disorganized waves with the RT - does it fine - but it convinced me I don’t want to do more.

Longer, Beamer and full displacement hull would be on my list if I needed to be on big water. RT really shines where we are though.

As I see photos of the beautiful NorthWest, where RTs are made, I see that is a great area to embrace all Ranger’s have to offer as well. The East and Gulf Coast ICW too.

Thank you for all the feedback.

Where did you place your autopilot and engine displays? Are they between the chart plotters or to one side? How are the ergonomics of whatever you chose? I am contemplating a new 29 and I am curious about this.

We ordered our 2019 R-29CB with only one 7612 at the lower helm with the thought that we'd do the poor man's 2nd chartplotter with an iPad. 1.5 years later and I finally installed it. An 11" iPad Pro in a Vidabox Kiosk mount (The mount is almost the same size as the 7612. Now I can either mirror the chartplotter on the Command Bridge so I have two independent Garmin units using the Active Captain app. Or i can run a separate nav app. Can also stream the Seahawks games!!

So far it's working really well, the response time of the screen isn't as fast as the 7612 next to it, so if I'm running radar that goes on the 7612 and the chart or gauges or whatever goes on the iPad.

I installed a large iPad Pro on a snap in-place RAM Mount and could not be happier. It not only mimics the Chartplotter if I wish, but more usefully it can run all sorts of apps while cruising (like displaying Raster charts and independent position data via SEAiq, weather data/radar, or Google maps which helps less nautical guests figure out where we are) or while in port. I can also view reference documents at the helm, as well any checklists (like pre-trip) that I have created. If you purchase a cellular-ready model it comes with its own GPS (even if you do not sign it up for cellular service) which gives you a GPS backup. I did not purchase a cellular plan but instead just use my cell phone hotspot. It looks great and is a very good match for the latest Garmin. Possible the only shortcoming is power supply. I thought about running DC power to it from behind the dash but instead just plug it into the 12v port via a USB adapter. The cord runs below the helm wheel and is not in the way. If you want to spend some money, LaunchPort has a boat model of their magnetic and induction charging mount.

I was thinking of adding a second unit hooked up to some rear-facing camera's. But I love the IPAD idea noted just above with secondary apps......

I use active captain on my iPhone and set it next to the throttle. I have 1/8 screen on my chart plotter dedicated to Autopilot. I just rest my arm on the armrest and touch the left/right arrows on the phone to adjust heading hold. No need to shift position in the seat - just sit back and relax.

3SKIPO - Check out my gallery. This is the factory installed dual screens on our 2012 R29.
