My R29 2012 shower sump does not run, water overflows. Where does the water go? Also have water in the shower bilge? Is this normal?

I have the same boat and have had shower sump problems. Either will not run or won't shut off. It has always been the float switch in the sump. I had some luck cleaning the sump and switch but have also had to replace it. The overflow water makes its way to your bilge. I am going to make my own sump using a sealed float switch from a septic system. The sump kit used is not designed for a lot of use and is a poor choice in this application. It would be suitable for AC condensate but not much more.

Also consider making a screen to cover the shower drain that will trap hair, toenail clippings, hair elastics and any other small objects that make their way to the drain.

Good luck!

I am not sure why the shower drains have been designed this way. I have been on many a boat that had a spring loaded switch that you push when water accumulates in the pan and the water goes directly to the pump and out the thru hull. It may be prettier not to have water accumulate in the pan while showering, but considering all the problems the shower sump causes I think the engineering should be changed.

We put an inline pump and manuall switch on our R25 to replace the shower sump that had clogged. Three years, works fine, sucks the shower dry.

Hello gailmarie,

The first place to check is going to be the fuse for the shower pump located on the 'dash fuse block #2'. The next step would be to inspect the shower drain box itself located beneath the aft section of the v-berth cushions. You'll want to clean all debris out of the box, and inspect/replace the float if necessary. Water that overflows the shower drain box will work it's way aft into the bilge.

Thank you,

-Tim

I like your idea. Do you know/remember what in-line pump and switch you installed?
Thanks

I used a Rule IL250 in-line submersible pump from Amazon. I also put a switch under the sink. It sucks the shower Dry but must be turned on/off my hand.

I took the sump out with a saws all

Did you install any type of filter or screen between the shower drain and the pump?
Thanks

I have a small hair strainer on top of the drain. Just sits there.
