We are interested in upgrading the transducer for the Garmin 7612. Does anyone have experience with this? Thanks Vic

Hello Vic,I installed the dual gt51m thru hull on my 2016 25sc with 7612,they are quite an improvement for fishing and include water temp.fairly easy to install once i got over putting holes in bottom of boat..there are some youtube videos to check out..

I am also interested in upgrading the transducer on our 2016 R-29. I would like to take advantage of more of the imaging capabilities on the 7612 to help with halibut fishing. Andrew recommended a thru-hull mount in a more forward position than the current in-hull location under the rear seat on the stern. He said the performance would improve a lot. I am a little concerned that a thru-hull mount might be compromised by contact with the trailer although I haven't really looked into it much yet. Certainly another potential source of flooding makes me a little uneasy.
Has anyone mounted a thru-hull transducer on the R-29 forward of the current position? If so, where and has it caused any problems? Are there any good flush mounted transducers compatible with the 7612?

before you drill holes have you considered the stern mount?

this garmin one offers chirp downvu etc. https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/530291

for fishing you are not travelling at 20 knots

Not sure why, but it specifically says for fresh water fishermen.

I just saw that
I think they are trying to be super targeted at mounting it to trolling motors hence the target audience. I see no reason why this doesnt work on the back of a tug though

I'd like to add "Forwardvu" (or whatever they call it) to my 7612. Never made any sense to me to know the depth after half the boat is already over skinny water. Nosing slowly into a shallow cove would be much less stress-inducing if you could see what's ahead of you before you got there, dontcha think?

Anyone have experience with the Garmin transducer that looks ahead?

There are a world of issues surrounding transducers for boats. The biggest issue is turbulence. Most of the transom mounted transducers mentioned above will not give satisfactory results with an inboard-too much turbulence. After a lot of research here is how I mounted mine for a 7612 on a R25

There are alternative transducers to give the "real time photo effect" but they are complex to install and stick out from the hull. Transom mounts will work with an inboard if not in motion and progressively fall off in effectiveness as you increase speed. I trailer my boat and no issues with my transducer. For halibut that are not deeper than 200 feet the one I chose is satisfactory. But getting the bait down to the fish with currents wind etc. is the bigger issue. Advice- go to a boat show and talk to Garmin or Airmar or try a web search for a forum that talks about transducers. There is one specific one that is great and has a huge following of pro fisherman- the word "truth" is in the title.
