Has anyone had this done yet? How did your Volvo perform?

I assumed this was done prior to delivery by the factory. Perhaps I am wrong.

I thought with the newer Volvo engines since all the subcomponents are made by volvo that the warranty registration was taken care of by the factory?

Do you have an R31? If so, did you get a Warranty on your Volvo Engine? The reason for commissioning is to get the Volvo Warranty paper.

When we purchased our 2010 R-25 I asked Jeff Messmer about component warranties and specifically the Yanmar 4BY2-150 engine. He indicated the factory took care of registering things with the respective Vendors. However, I did have to go online to the Yanmar web site and register my engine serial number later on. I'm glad I did this as Yanmar has had 2 minor recalls for a hose replacement and an oil sensor line. Having the engine properly registered and identifiable in the Yanmar data base helped a great deal as the local Yanmar engine technician was able to get reimbursed quickly without any fuss.

Maybe I'm not fully understanding "Commissioning for Warranty". You say "...did your Volvo perform?" which kind of confuses me.

In order for the Volvo engine to be Warranted, we had to have a Volvo tech come and test the boat out and verify performance so that Volvo will give a warranty on it.

I was just wondering what others experience with that process was.

Perhaps Andrew could step in and settle this confusing Topic? Is it necessary for a seperate Volvo Tech to certify our engines after they leave the factory in order for the warranty to be valid on the engines?

Insofar as performance I have nothing to really compare it to, BUT I love my D3-200. I was under the assumption as well that the engine would be under warranty after delivery without me either registering and or contacting Volvo for a technician visit and certification.

When we do one of our deliveries , we call our local Volvo guys {Marine Maintennance, Panama City ,FL] and they send a tech out and he does the delivery with us . His part involves the engine testing and pre delivery inspection, as well as warranty registration [ yes, they bring the handheld Volvo diagnostic tool and use it to record performance] and verify that the engine is within prop/performance spec . They are quite thorough. I ask them to bring all the spares and maintennance supplies they can so they can offer them to our customers , as a convenience. We spend a couple days with our customers to make sure they are comfortable with all systems and having the engine guys there is a bonus .
They also happen to be the Cummins guys , so if there is an Onan Gen on board they inspect and register that warranty as well .

It has been a couple of years or so, but the Yanmar engine also needed to be registered to validate the warranty after it was delivered to the owner. It did not require the mechanic, but as I remember Andrew reminded me to do it. I believe that I did it online.

When we had the oil pressure sender replaced under warranty here in Port Isabel, the regional Yanmar facility checked to see if my engine was "In the system". It was so the warranty work was okayed.

Let me try and help here. Volvo does things a bit differently. Volvo pays their certified dealers a few hours of labor to come out to the boats and do an engine inspection once it is in the new owners possession.

For a boat that is not delivered through a Volvo certified ranger dealer, this process is required to initiate the warranty on the engine. Since Ranger Tugs and Cutwater Boats are a certified Volvo OEM, we have the ability to skip the PDI when we deliver the boat. We go through the operation of the engine, service and all necessary training and register the engine for warranty. We only do this for local delivered boats that we deliver.

We also have the factory delivery option. Right now we are giving the options to our customers that do a factory delivery to send a Volvo center out to the boat to do the PDI or skip this process since we delivered it.

Personally, I think this is a great thing that Volvo does and I am sure it keeps their warranty numbers down because it is one final look at the engine installation and performance. At the factory, all of our engines installations have been Volvo certified.

Hopefully this helps clear a few things up. 😀

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to contact us directly at the factory.
