Hi Tugnuts Friends,

This weekend, I got a message on my engine control panel "ECM not communicating with Engine." I have a R31 with the Volvo engine.

The message after the engine cranked and started and did not go away.

The engine seemed to be running fine and I checked the connector to the ECM, but that did not resolve it.

The information panel at the cockpit displayed the normal information.

Any ideas of how to clear the fault? Is this a major issue?

Thanks a million!

Rob

Hi Rob, I know this may sounds oversimplified but when I get a weird message like that I turn off all power to the boat. Wait a minute and then turn everything back on. If the message comes back then more diagnostic work is required.

It happened with my autopilot yesterday. It was not talking correctly to the main Garmin unit. Power cycle everything and problem went away.

I hope that fixes the problem.

Please keep us posted.

I am not familiar with your configuration however, on my Volvo I found if I just turn off the engine without turning the ignition off also and then turn the engine battery switch off, when I turn the battery switch back on I always get an ECM error of some sort. I have never received a random error when turning the engine battery switch on if I shut the engine and ignition off prior to turning the engine battery switch off. Hope this helps.

I have had this when engine battery volts are low on start. usually due to either long crank or second crank, or low battery volts due to low charge, colder weather, or battery age is getting high.

It is funny, I have had that same thing happen on the Garmin - - I too just unplug the power to it and that corrects it. I'll try that with the engine.

Hi Rob, please shoot me a call in the office next time you're on the boat. I have a couple quick checks that we can do over the phone.

Thank you,
