portable rug/upholstry cleaner from bissell has worked well for us, in conjunction with one of those foaming sprays with a brush on the end for small jobs. I think i got an oxyclean for automotive one or something like that..

I used to recommend the 303 fabric guard product too, but it contains PFAS -- it's a fluorinated fabric treatment -- and those are really no good.
