I'm getting a "radar error" message on my Garmin screen when I switch to "radar overlay" for foggy conditions and the menu screen isn't showing the "radar setup' option anymore. Just happened. I've got a 2013 R 27 with a Garmin GPSmap 5212 system. Advice?

I have a 2011 R27. Radar conked out just before Bahamas trip. no biggie. Looked like corrosion on network cable at radar. Came back from Bahamas, replaced network cable, had power to radar, it did not work or power up. Garmin said send it back for $700. Returned and did not register on 5212, nor did it power up. Switched sounder to radar network port on back on plotter. Now neither sounder nor radar work, Garmin said plugs on back of plotter, are bad, they no longer support this unit. Bought a 1242 sux. sounder works, but radar does not work. Garmin said cables are bad and are sending new ones. Stay tuned for this saga.

I'd check the power and network cable going to the radar to make sure they're clean.

How do I access / find the radar cables to be checked. Where would the possibly corroded cables / terminals be located? do I have to take the dome apart and check inside?

Sometimes I need to unplug my radar at the dome and plug it back in for it to pick up on the plotter. Usually if the boat has sat for a few months.

There are two cables that hook up to the radar. One is power, coming from your panel most likely. The other is data that sends radar info to plotter. They both connect with threaded watertight fittings at the base of the radar dome.

The data cable should be at the back of your plotter. Your power cable should be at the panel or a fuse block. I have a 21 so I just have a little fuse block. You probably have a panel.

You might check if the power cable has an inline fuse. Mine does and I’ve had it corrode a little which interrupted the power to the unit. Cleaned the fuse and it popped right up.

The problem with SU Carbs is the Lucas wiring.

I have a British Car if your old enough to know what I mean.

Its always the multi pin connectors that Garmin is obsessed with. Undo then, spray with electrical cleaner and connect and reconnect several times. That will clean the oxidation off the pins and all is well. If there is green corrosion inside the connectors spray with vinegar let soak while consuming one beer. Then spray with electrical contact cleaner and reconnect, repeatedly.

I also put Dialectic grease on all connections but some argue it will act as an insulator, works for me.

Vinegar, Beer and dialectic grease $10, Garmin service, an arm and a leg! (is Garmin service in Britain?)

Good Luck

Why do Brits drink their beer warm? Lucas makes refrigerators.
