Since taking delivery of my 21EC last fall I've been trying to think of a way to carry a kayak(s) on it without too much disruption to the cabin roof components and existing cable support.

Here is what I have come up with. I'd appreciate your suggestions/critique.

how long is that kayak? and what does it weigh?

You may want to extend the raincover and it's supports further to the stern so there is less beam carried on the cabin top.
Check out TuggerToy's album...they have 2 kayaks on top their R-21.

Went to look so figured I'd share.

Cheers

Hi Dave,

What is the HP of the outboard you have on your 21EC ? What sort of speed does it achieve ? Could you please post some pictures of your mounting.

I have a 8HP 4 stroke Mercury with low hours which I was going to sell. We have a 21EC on order which we don't receive until Feb/March 2011. I was thinking about an auxilary and maybe my 8HP would be adequate. Your mounting method could say me reinventing the wheel.

Many thanks

Geoff

I don't see a mast and cable support on TuggerToy's R-21. That gives it much more room on top than exists with R-21 ECs.

I plan to tow my 11-foot pontoon boat this summer behind the Red Ranger, which is an R-21 EC. It will be right up next to the stern with the front of the pontoons elevated a foot or so, and the swim step right between them. I have a 5 hp long-shaft Suzuki outboard on a spring-loaded motor mount that I use for trolling. But it also quickly attaches to the back of the pontoon boat if I want to motor about on that.

As soon as I get some pixes taken of the whole assembly, I'll post them for all to see.

While the R-21 doesn't have the little "stack" or the stainless "mast" of the R-21ec (although many R-21's have a large mast and boom with a shade) there should be no problem with interference if they are carried a bit to the stern with a foot or two hanging over the swim step. (I've attached a scale drawing of an R21ec with 2-17 ft kayaks. it's in my album as well ) By the way the ec models have an additional 18" of roof length over the older 21's.

Geoff

It's a Tohatsu 5hp 4 stroke and a Garelick spring mount. I'll try to get some pictures this weekend.
