I bought a used 2019 Ranger 23 last August 2020. In Fall had the boat hauled boat on land at CT Boat yard for the Winter. Boat is equipped with 200Yamaha & Std.Equip. in addition- optional-Solar Panel/Inverter/ AC/Windlass/Thruster. As such boat has 3 battery banks (Engine+House+Thruster/Windlass). In summer Batteries are kept charged at summer slip via 30A shore power to boats battery charger.
The Winter storage yard provided full winterizing of all boats plumbing and AC system. Yard offered battery charging by a standard extension cord to boat on a weekly basis. No 30A service via standard 30A power cord could be provided. A visit to boat recent visit to boat showed standard extension cord going to back of boat. Since boat had winter cover and covered with snow I was not able be see connection to Batteries.
This is my first power boat with anywhere near the power/electrical systems that are on this boat-- I was wondering if there there is a direct plug in to my boat's charger that the yard's extension cord is providing power to keep all battery banks charged?
If not.. what is the correct way to be charging the 3 battery banks via that extension cord? Is a standard automotive floating charger adequate and if so what terminals is it connected to to provide adequate charge to all 3 battery banks in winter?

The yard probably has a pigtail to your 30amp receptacle (30 amp to a std. 120v plug) or they connected an adapter to your existing shore cord or they have a charger connected to one of your batteries. If the latter then it is connected to one of your batteries and your ACR's will open up to your other banks above a 13.0v charge.

I assume they are using a pigtail. I use an adapter on the end of my shore cord when I store my boat in my warehouse.
My boat has a 3-bank 20 amp (DC) charger. It pulls 2+ amps (AC), so any extension cord is viable and safe.

Tks Chicago sam & Elvin ray---really appreciate feed back.. now can talk to yard with some good back round info.
This is an amazing informative web site!

Hello,

This is common on boat yards that cannot or do not have a shore power outlet they can plug into, also the amount of draw is small since they only thing that is "on" is the charger and once they are charged it would drop some more. Bring on summer!!

Thanks,

I am not familiar with your boat, but one would assume that the yard turned on the appropriate switches so that the charger is doing its thing? You know what happens when we assume!

Agree with knotflying. Even when shore power is connected if you don’t have the battery charger tuned on at the power panel nothing’s gonna happen.

thanks guys --I heard your comments-- (re ASS-U-me)--to date I am giving them the benefit of doubt, since they are a large reputable yard---however as sone as snow gets below 6" on ground -- I plan on taking a ride to the yard and taking a peak under winter cover to see charger/adapter hookup and switch activation..
