there have been two sold out of Winter Island Yacht Yard in Salem Ma. when mine comes in i will be sure to give a review of the vessel. i did sea trial a 23 I/O three months ago in very choppy waters. with the same beam as the 25 and 27 it banged through the waves the same as her larger cousins. she is very responsive at the helm with quick and tight turning ability. the cockpit is large enough to fish from with the folding seat in the raised position. in general, a fun weekend boat, but longer stays out would be very do-able.

Had the opportunity to spend a day on a members new R-21 EC. While we liked the boat overall the lack of speed was an issue. The other problem was the loudness of the engine. Others seemed to have no problem with it but wore me down over time.
Is engine noise a concern with the Volvo 170 R-23? I was leaning towards the Yamaha outboard.

The quietness of modern outboards is, IMHO, one of the prime advantages the R23 has over the rest of the Ranger fleet.
I suspect in the cabin, with door closed, you barely hear the outboard.
Personally I am not too fond of the looks. To me, the R23 looks like a cross between a Ranger and a Cutwater....a bot awkward.

I like the looks of the R-21 EC and is probably all the boat I need. Wish it came with a Yamaha F115. The R-23 with the Yamaha would be my second choice.

I love the looks of the R-23, and its my first choice in a new boat. My interest is the Yamaha outboard. I like the fact that it is on a bracket and not a 300 hp monster hanging on the transom like the Cutwater 24. Unfortunately with a daughter finishing college its still about 4 years down the road.
I think that the manufacturer has had good successful with the R23 so far. I seem to recall they received a couple of orders when the boat was first shown in January. I follow Pocket Yachts facebook page, and they have some pics of a R23 that they just delivered. They also have a short video clip that shows a speed of 40 mph with the outboard. :shock:
I think there was a new R23 owner on line last week, looking for a manual. I hope they become a regular on the forum and share their experiences with their new boat with us. 🙂

No, I did not notice the 23 inboard being any more loud than the 25 or 27. But with the chop of the sea there was quite a bit of noise coming through the hull as does the 27.
Having owned a Yamaha 150 on a center console I know these engines are quiet.
On one other thread I read someone said they did not like the lines of the 23 with the OB, neither do I. I has nicer lines as an IB. Look at the profile of a 29, the 23 is a two thirds model of it.
The trade off is more cockpit storage and and engine that is easier to work on, IMO.
I have wondered what a Ranger would be like with an OB, we'll I'm going to find out fairly soon. There are other trawler style boats out there with OB's. It's all in what you are used to seeing.

John, So your getting the Yamaha OB? Does the R-23 have windshield wipers and defoggers?

With No A/C (while underway) on the R23, ventilation will be important.
Studying the videos and picts, it looks like there are two opening roof hatches, a few small side opening ports, and the big rear liftup window. Did I miss any ventilation?
Love all the skylights, howevver at the same time, they will be a heat source.

One great thing I expect about the R23 is, at displacement speeds, it will be very quiet. Those Yamaha 4 Strokes just purr at low speeds.

John,
Weren't you bothered by the raised section of the cockpit floor in the I/O R23? I've been on a CW24 with the I/O and the two tiered floor really felt crowded to me.
Surprised no R23 owners here. Thought sales were fairly brisk out of the gate.

With the built in seating molded into the rear of the cockpit it does take up quite a bit of space. I thought the seat was comfortable in the forward facing mode. But when I flipped the backrest to the forward position, to sit facing the swim platform, I found that the seat did not offer as much room and felt as though I was half seated and half leaning. I believe the outboard offers more options for cockpit space and seating. Folding seat down and a padded cooler with a small folding table should offer enough space for 4 to 5 people and there is also the large window that opens to give an extra seat on the interior facing toward the cockpit. For those who will fish with this boat the OB will offer more free space for movement.
