For those of you that live in the Pacific Northwest I am sure that you understand why I am writing this to you from my home office. We have over a foot of snow and it is still snowing! Seattle does not do well in the snow. Lack of snow plow equipment, excessive snow and lots of hills are not a good combination.

The good news is that we have a dedicated crew that braved the snow and ice to make it into the factory today. They are hard at work building the first two Ranger R31's. Hull number one will debut at the Seattle Boat Show January 27th and hull number two will make it's east coast debut at the Miami Boat Show February 16th. The R31 is now up on our website at http://rangertugs.com/R-31 A spec sheet with pricing is also available for download. As usual, and with great personal sacrifice, Yvonne and I are willing to test and report on one of the new 31's. If you will provide us with one for the testing, we will provide all of the fuel and file weekly reports and test all of the equipment diligently over a period of several months. No pay will be needed.

Good luck Ranger Jeff and friends with this wonderful addition to a great line.

Trade me straight across for my R-29 (equipped the same) and I would be happy to tow that boat all around the country and show it off! 😀

For those of you coming to warm,sunny, Miami Wefings Marine will be there with the East Coast debut of the R 31 . We are excited and look forward to showing this boat . It has a couple things we have been asked for many times [like the flybridge] and should be a show stopper !

Will the R-31 be coming to the Vancouver Boat Show in Feb?
 
When will it be available to see in SoCal? And when can we see pictures??? I have a friend in Seattle that said he'd take pictures for me, but I want to see it for myself. And soon!
 
Excuse my uninformed self , but what is a $2000 electronic trolling valve? Its listed as an option on the new 31
 
It is essentially a "low gear" for the 31. It reduces pressure on the clutch plate by letting a small portion of the hydraulic fluid go into a bypass situation. This allows the clutch to slip in a controlled manner, reduce the speed that the prop is rotating at, and therefore reduce the boat's speed by a few knots.

A very rough analogy would be driving your stick shift car with the clutch partially depressed so that the clutch plate is slipping; you go slower. (in a car, this would result in a burnt-out clutch very quickly, but marine transmission are built differently and can handle this)

Can't you save 2 grand by just cutting back on the throttle?
 
It is designed for low speed for things like Salmon fishing, hence trolling, pulling back on the throttle would lug the engine, not a good thing.
 
Hey! Where are all you sneaky secret agent types? I would have thought someone would have snapped a few spy pic's of the new 31 being rolled into the seattle show by now! I need photos!! Someone please post a few! Those cartoon renderings just aren't do'in it for me!
 
Pulling back the throttle all the way to idle still results in a speed of amost 4 knots. That is too fast for trolling for some folks. If you want to go less than 4 knots at idle, you either need to spend 2 grand, or throw a bucket over the stern on a rope.
 
Lol! The engine is 40HP greater than an R-29, and I assume it is pushing a bigger prop. I'm guessing one of two things:

  • - the factory felt that the bigger prop would push the R-31 just a little too quickly at idle for fishing activities, or
    - they also wanted to provide this option with the R-29, but the Yanmar won't support a trolling valve (or was too expensive)


With most trolling valves, you are supposed to operate it either at dead idle, or within the bottom 10% of the power band; otherwise the transmission clutch discs heat up too much and you risk cooking your transmission

Kudos to the Ranger factory folks on the 31 - beautiful boat with some very interesting innovations. Sure to be the hit of the Seattle Boat Show! We were one of the first ones in the door and got to the Ranger display immediately... before the crowds hit. And each time we went by, there seemed to be more and more people in their display area. The display was first class with lots of smiling factory folks, and all the boats are being shown off nicely.

We have fun, Herb, wherever we go... we just don't have a cool display to hang out in. :mrgreen:
 
There are some pictures on captjim.blogspot.com ,He's a C brat so he only took some teasers, showing the fold out seat and the fly bridge. Just enough so that you can't figure how the fly bridge can come down for trailering.
He'd probably be delighted if you bought his book
