Greetings fellow Tugnuts,
As a limited edition Ranger Tug 23 Diesel owner, I wanted to chat with Fellow R23 Diesel owners. We can share any similar items that interests us all. I have been extremely happy with my decision to go with the diesel. I just wanted to know who are the others....

thanks

Juan

Hi Juan
Nixie checking in. Great idea, anything R23/diesel can be posted up here. 1st question... how many of us are out there? We love this rig!

I asked this same question when I was reviewing the R-23 and the new R-27/OB. They told they had sold five (5).

I chatted with John Livingston about the new R-27 having a stern drive diesel and he told me they had thought about it and even had a design on the drawing board, but finally decided against offering it. My R-27/OB even has the raised cockpit circular form for where the hatch was to be to access the diesel tank's shut off valve for the stern drive.

Greetings Mark / Baz
I guess the answer is (5) R23D owners (thanks BAZ), thats enough for a fire squad. I have had,I guess some minor get out the kinks issues but nothing serious. Its a great vessel, perfect speed, size and looks. Lets find the other (3) owners......

The first 23 D to be seen here last year was at the New England Boat Show in Boston. It has a blue hull and was purchased in the spring and resides at a marina in Salem Ma during the season. I have seen it a few times on the north shore (and actually got a chance to sea trial it while waiting for mine to be built) and noticed he put a full canvas bimini over the cockpit with canvas going down to the transom it may have been a full enclosure with the sides rolled up. Looked like a nice modification but our 23’s passed each other so quickly I only got a passing view. I have been considering a full bimini for my 23 OB.

Greetings Sleepyboat,
It would be great to find out where the Full Bimini top was made and how it looks on the 23. Thanks

Agreed!! Hellooooooo

Hello everyone. I am new to this sight and have recently started researching boats to complete the Great Loop. This will mostly be a "solo" trip for me with the occasional friend or family member joining me for several days. I am somewhat new to boating and came across the Ranger Tugs and really like what I see. I originally focused on the 21EC but am now considering the RT23. I have been able to find some information for performance data (mph, mpg, cruising speed, etc) for the gas powered outboard version but have not been able to find similar information for the RT23 diesel. It would be great if any of you could share that type of information.

The Tugnuts site has been very helpful and TIA for your help

Greetings,
I am a prior R21EC owner,I upgraded this year to the R32Diesel. I have limited experience in boating as I have only began 3 years ago. I have trailered both the R21 and the R23D to New England and went underway to the islands off the coast. Mainly Martha's Vineyard , Block Island and the Gulf of Maine via Portsmouth New Hampshire. The majority of my boating is on the Hudson River. Both boats have there own purposes and with some limitations. It was said that only (5) R23 diesels were made,
although the Diesel is a bit more, Its a sense of style that I liked about it. The lines and keeping it as a diesel to me is more in line with the RangerTug look. The outboards are great as well as there is more cockpit room and a little quieter than the diesel. It comes down to your style and your preferences. I am a true RangerTug fan and as most would say they are great well built boats. As far as the MPG, it has an 80 gallon tank compared to the outboard 75 gallon tank. I have not really taken any long trips to advise you on how long a tank lasts and how far you can go. Perhaps some to the others can elaborate. Good luck on your decision Ranger Tugs are well built vessels.

Juan:

If I were in your shoes and wanting to get in touch with other R-23 Stern Drive owners I would contact Ranger Tugs and ask them if they could arm you with contact info for the other R-23 Stern Drive owners they know about.

I'm assuming RT will not necessarily know all the owners as RT dealerships could have sold this model themselves and/or some of the R-23 Stern Drive boats have been sold to other secondary owners.

Given that a small number of the R-23 Stern Drive boats have been produced I think it's important for the small number of owners of this model be in touch with each other for exchanging their engine experiences etc.

When I was discussing my new boat purchase with RT and considering the R-23 and shortly after, the new R-27 I found that RT was rather dismissive any time I wanted to discuss the diesel Stern Drive model. This aspect had quite an affect on me for considering that model.... and of course it was not even being offered for the new 2018 R-27.

I posted up some performance info. It will get you in the ballpark.

Thanks Jaun, I agree completely with you on the style of the RT's. When I first saw the 21 EC I was hooked. Other than the limited Max speed I think the 21 EC would be the perfect boat for me. Just curious what speed you experienced going upstream on the Hudson. Not sure if they are similar but I will be setting off from Pittsburgh PA and will need to sail upstream from Louisville KY at the end of the loop.

That is a very good set of performance numbers for the diesel stern drive. When at 3500 and 4000 RPM how is the engine noise level in cockpit and in the cabin ?

Thanks for the performance specs Marc, that helps a great deal.

We had a 2017 R-23 diesel in stock but the boat was sold this summer and now resides on Moosehead Lake in Northern Maine. It was blue. Great running boat.

It can get loud but not crazy. When we're doing some miles we shut the door turn up the tunes and cruise. Usually keep it between 3200 to 3600rpm for the sweet spot. Heavy weather def. will hurt the economy.

Mercedes Benz can make very quiet diesel engines so why can't Volvo Penta do the same ??????????

They can, all it takes is fuel injectors that can fire 5-10 times per combustion event, an in situ pressure monitor and an ECU to tie it all together.
Although Mercedes, and all other diesel car manufacturers, do it mostly to reduce combustion pressures to minimize NOx formations.
Then again, doing this leads to a reduction in efficiency.

Thanks Jim. How much loss in efficiency occurs ???????
