Andrew, I am in the process of upgrading the anchor on my new Ranger Tug 25. I have no complaints about the anchor included with the boat as it is a good day anchor and satisfactory in light winds. Kudos to the factory for including 25’ of chain.

The claw anchor sets and resets very quickly, but has a history of slowly digging a trench in the seabed when compared to other plow-type anchors of similar weight. Therefore, it is not the best anchor for a sound night’s sleep while cruising.

At 5,750 lbs without gear, the Tug 25 is heavy for its length and requires an anchor one size larger than the 13-14 lb plow-type anchor many manufacturers include with the average 25’ power boat. My concern is the horizontal load on the anchor when caught in a blow.

If I have to select a heavier anchor, I am considering a 22 lb Delta or Rocna (they both have the same form factor) or the 26 lb Quickline Ultra. Can you advise regarding the compatibility of any of these with the bow roller on the Ranger Tug 25? I want to be sure that the anchor will stow securely in the bow roller.

Thanks and best wishes,

I have a Rocna, 10 kg. I had to move the "U" bracket forward (I had two bolt holes) and it works and stores fine.

I like the Rocna -- it holds very well. I have 40' of heavy chain and 250' of line, and occasionally drop down a 10 pound downrigger ball on a separate line as a kellet.

Lobo,

Thank you for the very useful information.

I also switched to the 10kg/22# Rocna - and didn't have to change a thing on my anchor roller. It fit just fine. I know that Ranger has installed different rollers over the years, so you may want to check which model is on your boat. I think I put some pictures in my album that might help.

Many thanks to Dave on "Lobo" - he switched to Rocna first and helped me with my conversion.

Lobo and Island Ranger,

I have done some more research and the Rocna is, indeed, a fine anchor. I will double check my bow roller.

I use a 22# Delta with 50' chain in Alaska - setting the hook every time out. Great results - sets hard, breaks out with windlass ok, and stows easily with no changes to bow roller. I think this is much better than the Bruce - type anchor of similar weight.

Intuition,

I agree. I had a Delta on a previous boat and was quite satisfied with it. The Delta and the Rocna have virtually the same form factor for anchors of the same weight, so it appears that both those anchors are quite compatible with the Ranger Tug 25 bow roller.

The 22-lb Rocna anchor fit the R25 anchor bow roller perfectly as shown in these pictures.
