Sad video. There is a comment about delamination of the layup. Can someone explain that to me?

Daryll.
That is certainly not pretty. Delamination is where the layers of fiberglass didn't have the correct amount of resin in that area holding the fiberglass together. Depending on how the hull was laid up will depend on the reason for the lack of resin. I couldn't tell from the video if there is actually delamination or if it was smashed on the rocks.

I can tell you about this. This boat is on the hard next to my new R29 at Winter Island Yacht Yard. It’s not pretty. The boat was smashed on the rocks. There was a bomb cyclone that hit the Northeast a couple of weeks ago with gusts up to 90kts and another one that followed with gusts over 50. I’m not sure which one of these events did it, but this R31 was on the mooring ready to be hauled after the storm. The constant tacking in the storm, caused the mooring pendant to chafe right through. Boat pounded against rocks for several hours. Boat was on mooring at dark and gone in the morning.

Boat is full of sand and is worse than it looks in this video. I feel for the owners ho have had the R31 for only a couple of years. I can relate as the Hunter 260 I had for several years, chafed through its pendant during a similar storm in Mystic during the fall of 2006. Never forget receiving the call - Mr. Zigmont..........

Thanks for the personal insights. Wow! I sure hope they had great insurance. What a loss.

Insurance company buys boat from owners for the policy limit
They go boat shopping
Salvage dealer buys boat from ins. co.
Hull is stripped right down to the bare fiberglass
The equipment sells to surplus dealers
Hull is ground to small pieces and land-filled
And every one is happy - more or less

You should not do the uplifting thanksgiving speech.

Anchor left on Bow Roller, not a great idea, especially in strong winds/high seas, it's a pennant guillotine...
