Subject: Raptor Decking installed today on my R29 CB's cockpit

This was a nice free perf for me today. The Raptor Decking was installed that took just 90 mins. The fella did a really good job.

Shared photo album here -> https://www.icloud.com/sharedalbum/#B1AG60dj6GEItlm. The dark areas are just damp from a little cleaning after the installation and will dry off quickly. I'm pleased with this.

very nice Baz!

if you dont mind sharing; what does a cockpit in raptor deck cost?

Amazing what a CNC machine and some good measurements can do!

Gavin: PM sent to you. 🙂

I don't know if Baz wants to share, but last time I looked the prices were on the Raptor web site. For the RT-29 it is in the $2K neighborhood. The Cutwaters are between $1100-$1600 depending on the boat.

I met the Raptor guys at the Seattle Boat Show. Seem like great people and product. I believe they quoted me $1400 installed for my cockpit on a C-28. I have a little concern about staining from salmon blood but they tell me it is stain resistant. The other thing is you need to be careful not to drop heavy or sharp objects as it can leave a gouge. They also suggest using Raptor Deck remnants to cover chair legs so the deck does not get indentations.

Your R29 installation looks fantastic and helps validate my interest. Thanks for sharing!

Yes, if placing folding chairs on the decking it can leave an impressions as the surface is about 1/8" rubberized material. I was told if chairs are placed on the decking to call Raptor and they would send me material to place on the bottom of the chair legs to avoid the indentations.

Cleaning can be done using warm water and any dish washing liquid that has no acid in it. Use a stiff brush with the warm water wash down.

The installer told me a story where a customer had installed the Raptor Decking and when changing engine oil accidentally spilling almost a gallon of the used oil onto the decking. He called Raptor in a panic and was told to used warm water and a dish liquid and then using a stiff brush to clean up the mess. The boat owner did this and the clean up was pretty well done.... except there was some residual stuff still left. He was told to use WD40 and brush vigorously again. He did so and the mess was completely cleaned up with no evidence of the oil mess. The trick here was to do the cleanup task immediately. This tells me the decking is pretty well indestructible and can be cleaned easily with just warm water and a dish cleaning liquid.

I watched the installer install the complete kit and when all done he removed various installation marks using a blue-looking Window cleaner in a spay bottle - Windex.

FYI...
Spilt a bit of diesel on the Raptor decking today.... 🙁 It cleaned up nicely with some warm water and dish washing liquid. Looks like new. The cleaning process claim made by Raptor is indeed credible/correct. 😀

The brand name for the actual material is Ultralon Foam, the U.S. distributor for the product is in RI, Ultralon is a New Zealand company.
I have the Pico folding chairs and they will leave deep impressions in the decking material as the base of the chairs are fairly sharp. I bought square rubber furniture protectors, drilled 4 holes in them and tied them to the bottom of the chairs. When the chair are opened I move the pads under the corners and they stay in place unless the chair is moved. I have found that Simple Green is a good cleaning solution.

I have a similar material on my Cutwater's swim step. Caught bluefish the other day that bled all over the place. Cleaned up fine. This stuff is great.

This looks amazing. Can it be done as a DIY? Would like to put this on my 23... Im getting black marks from peoples feet that is surprisingly difficult to clean off

I don't see why not. Just take care to place the pieces correctly and attach one end with the backside adhesive and slowly lay the piece down a little bit at a time to avoid air bubbles while removing the backing paper. Clean the cockpit deck first to remove any dirt/crud and when all done use a carpet roller to squeeze any remain bubbles out. My installer took around 90 mins to complete the task.... but he's a professional and quite likely has done this type of work many many times. It looked simple as I watched him, but suspect there are some gotchas. Just go slowly and take care.

In the event the decking (or some of it) has to be removed it should be sliced and then pulling off the slices. Clean the exposed surface and reapply a new piece.

They sell a kit for the R-23. There are installation instruction in the FAQ section.

Cheers,

Bruce
