Hello all,

I had a surveyor on our boat this week and he was doing an inspection and found an area in our engine where the raw water hose is rubbing on the engine between the filter housing and the engine inlet. Has anyone else seen this? If so, is this an easy adjustment to rotate the top of the housing to better align the hose parallel to the engine, or is that even possible? Any suggestions?

This looks like the same sea strainer I have on my R31

It looks like you can take the top off and rotate it based on the 6 hex heads on the top of the strainer. However, based on your photo, you don't have enough slack in your hose, so you'll need to find a new length and cut accordingly. It might also rotate too much and then rub against the side of the engine bay wall. The steel reinforced rubber hose is a pain to deal with and cut, I had to shorten might to install a flush kit. It looks like the engine bay on the R31 is a bit bigger and doesn't have this issue.

Before you start all that though, is it possible to close your sea-cock, loosen the pipe clamps and rotate the hose, there looks to be a slight bend in it and maybe you can get that bend to be away from the engine. Maybe it was rotated during an impeller replacement.

Great points in this reply--thanks. I will look at the bend and see if that is a possible option for simplicity sake. After that, I will look into a new hose length and go after it that way. I appreciate the feedback!

I was on a friend’s R27 several years back when a marine surveyor was going over it and spotted a similar issue involving a fuel line (which rubbed primarily when the engine started up and shut down).

The surveyor’s recommendation was to buy a foot of extra hose, split it down the middle, and wrap it around the fuel line to be a sort of “sacrificial hose” for the rubbing. The extra hose showed some signs of chaffing eventually, but never wore through in the time my friend had the boat. It proved to be an easy and reliable solution.

Another possible solution jumped out at me int he pictures I have. Please see the one below. That clamp screw looks like it is part of a wall mount bracket that I am hoping holds the strainer assembly itself. Maybe I can loosen that and turn the strainer assembly about an inch? I will be there tomorrow afternoon to give it a shot, but if anyone has been down this path before me, I am happy to learn from your experience!

For anyone keeping track, the side clamp was the ticket. Loosened that up and was able to twist the strainer just enough to not need to change any hoses or other aspects and there is now a gap between engine and strainer hose. So, we are all set.

I plan to purchase a backup strainer basket for the raw water strainer on my 2019 R-29. It is the same strainer shown in the images on this discussion. Is this a Groco strainer? I have searched the web and their website but cannot seem to locate the same model. If it is Groco, does anyone know the size and model number?
