I found the pump on while doing work on the boat out of water. Turned it off. Later on checked it. Turned it on, switch illuminated but no familiar pump noise. I am assuming that the time it ran while dry fried it. Replace the unit or is there something I am missing hopefully?

As an adjunct does anyone know of a water proof pushbutton switch I can replace the (#$%^##) switch that comes with the pump. It's design lends itself to replacement of pump as it is easily caught on clothing, nets, cords etc. and pulled to on position. I guess it needs to be about 15 amps (sounds like a lot to me as this will start a 1hp motor at 110 volts) as the fuse protection is 20 amps.

Thanks

I often find this switch in the on position too. I keep the valve turned to the off position to prevent the pump from spraying water in the cockpit. I haven't discovered it being an issue with the pump running or burning out. Check to see that the little lever next to the outlet is turned to allow water to flow through. With any luck, that could be your fix. I too wish it wasn't quite so easy to accidentally turn on.

The pumps can run dry, but I am not sure for how long. However, there are replacement parts sold.
As far as a switch protector. I have been looking for one, but have yet to find one. For now I put a small clip on the top of if and the cockpit light switch to prevent accidental engagement.

I too have found it on lots but I keep the little valve closed and the cap in the end so although it is on it is not pumping
I have had mine shut off from what I suspect is overheating from prolonged use but it did start up again .. Which makes me think there might be some kind of relay that can be replaced?
Good luck

We've had the same thing happen. Our solution -- We take the fuse out, put it in the cabin in an easy to remember place, and then just pop it in when we want to use the wash down. We usually take it out again as we clean up the boat and prepare to leave it at the dock. It has proven to be an easy solution.

That fuse can get corroded. A good place to start if the pump doesn't work.

Did you try pumping water or just turn on the pump? Most wash down pumps are the same thing as the fresh water pump - the pump only runs when there is demand (you open the sprayer on the wash down hose). In that case, they can be turned on and not have a concern with running the pump dry, as long as there is no "demand". If the line is primed with water, the pump won't make a noise until you open the sprayer.

I have replaced the fresh water pump on our boat three times in the 8 years we have owned her... they don't last like they used to. The pump for the washdown (ours is plumbed for fresh water washdown) hasn't needed to be replaced in that same time.

My pump was intermittent. Mike Rizzo and I cleaned up the connections and terminals on the back of the switch. The problem was solved. I suggest that you do this prior to replacing the pump.

Hi all: Being the owner of an R21 I don't have the luxury of a 'raw' (sea?) water washdown pump, but I assume my fresh water pump runs on the same principle? In other words, If I switch the pump on, but do not open the tap over the sink it will not start until I actually create the demand (open the tap). Sound right to you guys?

Also, I have for some time considered modifying the sink tap in my R21 so that I can attach a small hose for fresh water washdown after berthing and before I head home. Does that sound like a good idea?

Alternatively, I guess it would be possible to insert a T-junction in the discharge line, under the sink & tap, plumb through the aft bulkhead and install a small hose/valve connection outside in the cockpit. What do you all think?

KInd regards to all from Western Australia.

Hello Stevan,

I have done the mod you ask about. It works fine, but he water tank on the 21EC is rather small so washing down the cockpit will be limited. Another Tugger (named Portnut, click here: http://portnut.weebly.com/upgradesrepairs.html) has installed a RAW water washdown on his boat. I've thought of doing it too but it is down a little on my "mod list."

Pics are in my album.

How's the mast support project coming along?

If hitting that switch is an issue, remove the fuse and place it in that rear seat. It's easy enough and that way there will be no power to the switch unless you want it. Then, just put the fuse in and your golden. Or just make part of your routine to look at the switch and make sure it's in the off position. 😉
