I'm not that familiar with my electronic having just acquired my R25 this year, so tell me do I have to program my Garmin 5212 plotter or is the Yanmar data automatically displayed?

Melot,
Providing you have the sending units installed, you should get the info on your Garmin. As an example, if you don't have a water temperature sensor you won't get that information. You will have to set up your data screen to show the information you are interested in seeing in conjunction with other screens you want to display.

In your manual for the Garmin 5000 series GPS Plotter, go to the section "Using Combinations" on page 21. You can customize the screen to show 2, 3, or 4 sections. The engine data can be one of the sections. Also some engine data can be stored in the data bar at the right of the screens. Save the combination after you customize it and then from the Home screen, select combinations, and then select your newly customized combination. Enjoy.

On Edit: The engine data will not show up if you do not have the engine running...or at least have key on.

I will be sending in a feature request to Garmin to provide the capability for switching to a Chartplotter pre-programmed display much like you can do on a car radio's pre-programmed channels by pressing 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc. In this way it will be very easy to have the Chartplotter's Engine display readily available when needed without the fuss we have today

Barry, You can set up your Garmin screen with the engine display in a combination, then it is one click to access. One of my several combinations is "Radar Overlay on right side, Navigation chart on left top and Engine on left bottom". It is easy to customize the standard combinations supplied on the chartplotter.

Thanks Herb for that info. I had played with combo displays in the past and had completely forgot that form of customization. I will give it a try today and post back... Thanks again. 🙂

Herb: I went to our boat today and fussed with the Combinations configurations and finally I was able to get a screen Combination of Nav Chart, Radar Overlay and Engine data displayed. I now have this setup and it's just 1-click away.

Thanks for prompting me to do this and quite honestly removes my need to mess with the Yanmar engine display to make it more visible in strong light conditions.

I will say however, that getting the engine gauges display along with Nav Chart and Radar Overlay was not intuitive at all for me. The learned trick was to select Fuel vs. Engine as I drilled down through the "Change Combination" menu system. I kept selecting Engine and always was ending up with JUST the fuel gauge as the 3rd screen combo. No matter, a quick Call to Andrew sorted me out.

I do like this screen combination, and I added engine RPM to the side data bar as that is something I like to see clearly vs, squinting at the Yanmar engine display.

I also like the Combination feature which allows me to click on (touch) any of the 3 screens to make it go into full screen mode. Niceeee.

Thanks again... -Barry
