The latest update for GARMIN System Version 2019.0403.1 includes the following components:
GPSMAP 7616xsv Sonar v.4.10 (v3.90)
GPSMAP 7616xsv v15.00 (v.12.10)
REACTOR 40 v2.50 (v2.30)

So today I tried to download and install this update on my iPad where the ActiveCaptain App resides.

I used a fast WiFi connection and thought this would be a “piece of cake”. Little did I know that I would spend the next 4 hours watching a glacially slow download... followed by an equally slow installation... followed by a verification that aborted when 100% had been verified... followed by a repeat of the ... you guessed it ... a second slow download.

At that point I gave up and emailed Garmin’s Marine Helpdesk...

Anyone else tried this?

Pretty much the same for me.

I have never liked ActiveCaptain, but thought I would give it one more chance.
Now it is SD card from Computer to Charplotter.

I have done a few updates via Active Captain. Yes, it is slow. I was 2 hours at the boat downloading and installing the info from Active Captain to my Garmin 7612's. I timed it this time - last time the only reference I had was that it "....took a long damn time."

I knew it was a lengthy process, so I planned a couple other simple projects during that time. Drinking beer is a simple project. 🙂

Why didn’t I think of that?
Downloading to my laptop from the Garmin server is still prtty slow at 2 hours estimated time, but at least it works.
Thank you

The real scary part of doing these upgrades is the warning that if power to the devices is interrupted the device(s) may become unusable and will need to be replaced or some such other nasty remedy. 😱

If the weather looks like thunder/lightening I sure would refrain from doing the updates.

Just a thought to be mindful about.

I pulled down the Garmin updates yesterday from their website. took about a minute to pull the 300mb file to my laptop?
then about 3 mins to extract it onto an SD card?

is this an issue with downloading the update inside the ipad active captain app which you then connect via wifi to the chartplotter later to update?

for firmware upgrades I always avoid doing a wifi update if I can. you want the thing done as fast as possible and without network issues causing a drop out. you dont want to brick devices with a half finished firmware upgrade...

shoot if its a pain happy for you to send me an SD card and I will send it back with the updates installed (if you dont have a laptop to do it)
