Could anyone suggest a good gas grill for the back of my Ranger 25? I'm leaning toward the Magma marine kettle 2 gas grill. Does anyone have experience with this one or do you have a favorite? Appreciate your input.
Thanks

I use the Magna Catalina model, seems to work well even with a breeze blowing.

It's an OK grill. A little small. I refuse to pay their prices at Magma. I don't know, maybe it's me? There is a st. st. grill at Lowes, that looks like the Magma rectangle grill. It was $79.00. I was going to buy it and I saw a Magma rectangular grill, on sale for $99. So, I went with the Magma. The rail mount clip works great. And I also sprang for a hose to go from the 10# tank to the grill. ($45.00)

I don't know if you can adapt that Lowes grill to the rail clip. Never got that far.

We've been happy with the marine kettle 2 15in. size grill on our 27. The rail mount clips anywhere, and setup/takedown has become a breeze. Also has been reliable and seems very sturdy.

I will caution that it runs VERY hot, and our first attempt at burgers on medium heat had them transform into sausage patties...... so that means a it's pretty efficient and a canister can last a good while.

Haven't needed parts yet, but they do seem to be available at west marine stores, and the canisters are almost universal.

I also have the Magma Kettle 2 grill, 15" size. We have been very happy with it. It stays lit even in windy conditions. The Magma rail mount is very secure and makes it easy to install and take down the grill.

As Crewdog says it will get very hot on High. Great for searing your steaks and leaving the inside rare!

We went with the round magna. A bit smaller but I liked the cone heat deflector as it allows for frying pans, coffee pots and pots to be used on it like a regular burner. Do be careful with the stem on the bottom that holds the regulator and gas bottle. If you rotate it, it will fall out. Much to the amusement of the other boaters with us, I perfected my free dive skills to retrieve the stem off the bottom.

I did a magma with the dual 1" railing mounts. West Marine had this one for $75 off. Mounted port side on transom.

Now all I need is to run a gas line down to the propane holder. Any suggestions on what size bottle to use, propane line to use, etc?

Hello Dial,

Is your grill an "infrared" type? Either way how do you like the rectangular format?

Dave

Yes, it is the infrared model. Not sure what that really means though as it just has some extra medal plates under the cooling area to disburse/bounce the heat around.

Rectangular yes. I find it more like cooking on my home BBQ. One thing that I think will make this setup even better is they sell a removal shelf that clips on so you can cut meat and have a staging area for your food.

I tried mounting this in a few areas (including swim step railing) and found this to be the best spot for me. You can make quick trips back to the kitchen and sit down with everyone while food is cooking.

Enjoy!

I have an R125sc and I like the Magma. I like the mounts for rail as they are fast and easy. I use the small gas cartridges as they seem to be more than adequate. I bought the Teflon coated flat griddle which, while very expensive, is one of the best boat purchases I have ever made. I think I also bought the extended shelf as a place for putting prep stuff while cooking. It saves a mountain of time cleaning (time is valuable while cruising as the demands of cruising can be exhausting). We use it for French toast, eggs, pancakes, frying and baking fish. Almost never use the interior cooker. The only problem is creating a good place to store it.
