I'm looking at buying a ranger tug 27 a 2020 with yanmar 300 OB. Casual survey Lifted center hatch cover in cockpit and noticed about 2 inches of water in the hold
Neither bilge pump was on. They were totally clogged with silt debris Etc. Found the reason for the water was cockpit drains were totally clogged up causing water to spill over.
Red flag. Cleaned out drains with an auger. Other red flag is the yamaha 300. The owner never performed the 100 hour maintenance required. Engine has 125 Hrs. on it.
I also noticed that there were numerous small rust spots on the prop ( all three blades). I have had 3 sail and an R25. Inboard yanmars. I never had any issues with rust on the prop.
All my previous boats had zincs behind the prop. The yanmar 300 did not. My question is this a concern? I know the 300 has 4 anodes in the upper part and I think 2 in the lower part.
Are the rust spots on a stainless prop a bad sign of corrosion? Also he had no maintenance record of any work at all. All comments are appreciated.

Thanks

None of those issues would be red flags to me for purchasing a used boat. It's common to get water in the bilge, and the aft bilge pump can't get the last inch out. A 2020 model may need new bilge pumps anyway. I have a '21 model and have to replace 2 of the 3 bilge pumps before this season officially begins.

With only 125 hours on the F300, for a 2020 model, I'd expect to see slight rust stains on the prop. The boat simply has not been used much. Stainless isn't rust-free. It'll go away once the boat's ran.

The only maintenance required with 125 hours... would have been the 20 hour service when new, and the 100 hour engine maintenance later. That's an oil and filter change, fuel filters, spark plugs, impeller inspection/replacement. Me, personally, I wouldn't be concerned with the maintenance records with such low hours, as the first thing I'd do is perform the 100hour maintenance (Oil and filter change, spark plugs, and fuel filters, and impeller) simply due to time. If the last oil change was done 2 or 3 years ago, I'd want fresh oil in there today.

The Yamaha F300 has 8 internal crankcase anodes, 2 thermostat anodes (none which are visible), and at 125 hours, it's unlikely they need to be serviced. At 500 hours, my internal anodes still looked great. Externally, there's the engine trim anode (which is just above the prop), and the handlebar anode (on the transom bracket). Plus the trim tab anodes, if installed.

Here's a link that illustrates the anodes.

Thanks for the info. It's my first OB so trying to get as much info on the 300 as I can. Your response and pics really helped.

BTW submariner, I watched some of your videos on the 27 and convinced me to go for it. 🙂

Thanks for watching!! I wish I could collect them all. But the R27-OB is my favorite. 😎
