Registering name with Transport Canada

Recently we purchased a 2016 R27 and will be taking delivery later this month. The dealership licensed the boat for us and today we got the official licensing form which was done at no cost. I have also come to find out that you can also register the name of your boat through Transport Canada at a cost of $250. My question is, are there any advantages in registering the boat name? Before I send the Feds any money I would just like to hear from other boat owners regarding this.

Registration with Transport Canada seems to be an unnecessary complication and expense. The registration completed for you by the dealer gives the boat a unique registration number. From there you can choose to add any boat name you wish. When I purchased my R27 from Port Boat House the dealer had my unregistered chosen name put on the boat for no added fee.

Thanks Osprey. Yes the name is being stencilled on our R27 at no additional cost as well. The licensing (BC number) and registering (name and type) are very different things and I must say I was a little confused as to why? I too do not see any advantage to registering our boat's name but that was me just making an assumption. Since naming a boat is new to me I just wanted to ask if there were some advantages to registering it I was not currently aware of. Seems there are not.

Seems to me that a really good advantage to registering a boat with either Canada or U.S. authorities, is that IF you had an emergency and only had time to call once, that the Coast Guard would have your name, contact numbers, and vessel info on file already.

On the way to Desolation Sound a couple years ago, i remember a boat calling in on fire, with panic evident in the call. Got to give a pat on the back to the watch stander at Comox Radio for being calm and helpful.

Correction on the choice of name.....When you document your boat, the name you choose, must not be in use; otherwise you must add a number after the name. As well as part of the process the boat must be measured and selected dimensions appear on the boat's papers as part of the vessels description. The document also serves as proof of ownership where just registration with an ON or BC prefix does not.

Assuming that transport Canada is the same as an us coast guard registration

While it may not be useful for a ranger tug as much as for an ocean going sailboat a us coast guard registration is required if you go into international waters. It also requires us citizen ship to command a us coast guard registered vessel.

The name does not have to be unique but must follow some rules
