Rendezvous 2013

Bev and I will be there with our R29 "SQUEEZER7". Just keep me away from the Ranger guys. Last year we traded in a 2 month old R 25. We moor at Shilshole in Seattle in the summer and looking forward to meeting many more ranger owners.

Mark and Debbie plan to attend in the Pelican.

Looking forward to it! Sue, on the new, to-be named R-29

Doug and Betty L in our 25 would like to attend. Maybe we will have a name for our tug by then! We plan on attending other gatherings before this but is there an info spot for newbes to learn how all this gettin together stuff works? Perhaps a Tugnuts guide to social gatherings? Everything a newbe wants to know but is afraid to ask?
Is moorage booked as a group or do we do it on our own?

We will be posting Rendezvous details soon, but in answer to your one question, moorage is booked as a group in advance but each individual boat is responsible for paying for their own moorage on arrival.

Hi Pat

Please add our names to the Rendezvous 2013.

Welcome aboard, Doug and Betty L, 😀

Perhaps I can make a few comments about things now after almost a year in the group!

SIGNUP AND TRAVEL

When you sign up, know that Tugnuts will be happy to see you!

If you have not boated to the area, let the group leader know that, and perhaps you will want post on this forum to see if there are others traveling at the same time and you can travel with another boat. Ask the leader or on Tugnuts if you have other questions about getting there.

ARRIVAL

If you radio the leader, USUALLY ON 68, as you get close to the dock, there will be folks standing there to help you land and grab your lines. Try to remember to turn on both thrusters before arriving at the dock, which I have forgotten at times!

After you turn off the engine and systems and are on the dock, the next step is to be sure you are tied up how you want to be, then to go to the office, usually on shore, and register your boat there, paying for however many nights you plan to stay. Credit cards are normal currency.

I have found it very tricky to take time to rinse off the boat and wipe it down because as soon as arriving we start talking, then I pay, then walk the dog, and forget about cleaning the boat. It is a very good idea to wash down the boat asap, if you can manage, and if you have your own hose that is helpful, because not all docks leave them laying around! Most folks seem to use the soft bright cloths that I see in Costco, and by rinsing the boat and stainless, then drying at least the stainless and windows, which I did not do often enough, your boat will stay cleaner, and you can see out better!

FOOD and DRINK

Come with chairs for both of you (and guests if you bring any) to bring to the dock, and if you have room, a table to put food on. We gather for Happy Hour with snacks we share, and folks provide their own liquid refreshments generally. In addition to chairs, have one or more bowls/platters and serving utensils if needed for your food to bring to the gathering.

We often have potlucks on the dock, so we bring our own place settings, and brimmed hats are often useful in the late afternoon to keep the sun out of our eyes. Often we go back to our boats for jackets as the air cools. :!:

ACTIVITIES

Usually there are planned activities available to enjoy, such as nearby areas to boat to, interesting local events/color/pubs/chandleries, and Ganges has a nearby park full of vendors with homemade items and food on the weekend.

TUGNUTS

This is a chatty group, and someone always has something new to share, such as last May when Vicki of Moondance showed us a new vase that had multiple partitions to place fresh flowers in, and she had it pasted somehow on one of her windows, which was cheerful and welcoming. Folks are always interested in things that are useful, colorful, whimsical, and take up very little space, naturally.

Discussions may range from cleaning products to a new drink, a recipe or a myriad of other ideas. As we get to know each other better, we may want to catch up on jobs, grandchildren, or whatever.

In summary, we all love boating and our boats :!:

"Keep on Tuggin" will be making the trip north for our first visit to area and the Rendezvous 2013 events. My tug is home berthed in Alameda California. Any suggestions about making the trek would be greatly appreciated. Andy G.

How long will you be in the area?

Hi Andy,

I just saw your post and can share our experience doing the same thing.

The Circle T is our Ranger 29, which we keep in San Pedro, CA -- near LA. We've had the boat trailered to the PNW for the entire summer each of the past two years, and then back again to LA in September or October after having spent the summer cruising. In fact, we're hoping to be able to take her up to the PNW again this summer. We originally thought we were going to do it just once, but once we did that, we were hooked.

Since it's a little boat and a big ocean with an inexperienced crew (my wife and myself), going by water from LA to Seattle on her own is out of the question. That's why we bought a trailerable boat after all. But we don't own a truck or a trailer, and have no interest in hauling it ourselves. I've never towed anything bigger than a U-haul trailer, don't want to put out the money to buy a truck and trailer, don't want to insure them, store them, maintain them, let alone drive them. If someone gave us a trailer, it'd cost $250/month just to store it in LA. Just not storing a trailer alone pays for half of the roundtrip for having the boat professionally trailered.

So we've hired Cory Gracey to haul it for us each year. He's the fellow whose company delivers many of the new boats for Ranger Tugs that aren't bought locally. His company name is Sharp Yachts Transport. He has the equipment, skill, insurance etc. to do it safely and reliably. He charges about $2.50/mile and that includes taking your boat out of the water, preparing it for safe transport (lowering the boom, securing the equipment) and then putting it in the water at your destination and putting it back together again so it's ready to go. Dirty for sure, but the radar mast and equipment is back in place. We weren't even there last year for the delivery in Tacoma.

His number is 425-508-0802. You can see his website at: http://sharpyachtstransport.com. If you call him, tell him Tym sent you. Maybe I'll get a discount...

Hope this helps.

Jeff Mount and Barbara Evoy will be there with their 2011 R-27 "Tugnacious". We attended our first Rendezvous last summer and it was fantastic. We cannot overstate its value. Especially to new owners.

Although the home port is listed as Volcano, CA (pop 103) the boat is "berthed" on its trailer in Putah Creek Vineyard here in Davis with a nice cover made by King Marine. Although it is a pain to haul a 35' 10,000 lb. trailer back and forth to the PNW with our beater truck, we love having the ability to move the boat to new destinations and camping in it as we go. And you get used to driving real slow and big. This is one of the very best attributes of the trailerable tug. Especially if for your spouse it is all about the destination rather than the journey.

See you all in Anacortes. We may link up with the Desolation Sound cruise at its northernmost destination. And for all you Northern Californians, plan on time in San Francisco Bay watching the America's Cup races. We did it last summer and it was a blast.

Jeff
