I've tried the WA state online boat registration fee renewal web page at https://fortress.wa.gov/dol/vesprod/FeeCalcVessel.aspx for calculating my fee but it displays an error which I cannot fathom nor get past.

vf55r4

Have others in WA also seeing this error ?

I enter my WA registration info (minus the leading two characters "WN") and my last name or last four chars of my HIN number and no matter what combo of info I enter I see the above error.

While the directions don't ask you to omit the WN prefix, the example they give is misleading. Try again with your entire reg. number, including the WN. It worked fine for me a few weeks ago, and testing it just now shows, correctly, my renewal is over 6 months out.

I had tried with the WN prefix earlier but alas, get same error.

You said "... my renewal is over 6 months out."

How come? I thought ALL boat registration renewals occur in June of each year!

Baz,
I had no issues with mine. In fact, I use the site for all of my vehicles and trailers. Wow! We have more than we first thought. Anyway, if the WN number does not work, use the vessel's hull number. There may be a data problem in the system.

I've used all the combos of entering the data, WN+#, #(-WN), HIN, Last name, but nothing works for me. I also wonder if the data base is not up-to-date. My boat was first registered in June/July of 2009. I think I may have to call the DOL Dept which is going to be a PITA as last time I called I got nowhere and had to wait close to 60 mins with the call being dropped because no human being was available...

There is a place in Edmonds you can register in person if you are here during the week. Very close to the Port. Let me know if you want more info.

Must be something wrong with your numbers. Try 17403-139th Ave NE in Woodinville. About a block east of Molbaks. No computers, just humans.

I'm curious -- is the WA registration fee a constant each year or is it somehow influenced by the boat's market value ?

Bottom line -- does the annual fee ever reduce ?

Baz --- Finally, a little good news. Between 2008 and 2010 my license fee has gone down $130. --- Cary

Yes, they all renew in June. But you can renew as early as January - 6 months out. The message indicated my registration was already renewed.

Cheers

OK -- I've run to ground the issue with me not being able to renew online. My boat was documented with Home Land Security / US Coast Guard last June. On the telephone today the DOL told me an alert marker was on my boat's entry in the data base. This alert description was that "US Coast Guard documentation was pending".

In order to clear the "pending" status in the data base I needed to show proof that the boat's US Coast Guard documentation had been completed. To do this I have to visit my local DOL sub agent office and show them the completed documentation and also, as the boat is shown as being owned by my wife and me we both have to be there for signature verification. Of course the DOL person did not tell me about the ownership signature verification requirement.

I get to the DOL sub agent office and the person there at first insisted I present the original documentation (that I keep on the boat)... Duh

I made a fuss (frothed at the mouth and made strange sounds 😉 and made motions to throw myself on the floor in this state 😉 😉 ) and the DOL sub agent person finally decided to check the facts with the office manager. It turned out a copy of the US Coast Guard documentation was acceptable which is what I had in my possession.🙂

As I was in the DOL sub agent office without my wife I found myself unable to have the data base alert marker removed due to not being able to have both our signatures verified.

So it's another trip to the DOL sub agent office tomorrow with my wife. My wife is sick from Chemo treatments and stays in bed most of the day. They do make things difficult.

OK -- I'm off my soap box now... sorry for the rantings.

P.S. After all the above I forgot to ask what my renewal fee was. 🙁

Barry,
Should have thrown yourself on the floor started spinning in circles.... Ah, don't you love the government! And to think, I work with these people everyday! Now you understand why I like my wine so much......

Good luck, let us know how it all turns out.... by the way, if it helps, Karma's fees were just a hair (and I mean a frogs hair) under $1,000.00! In Nevada, it would have been $25.00! Oh well, we would not have all of you to call friends if we kept her in Vegas (you are very expensive friends though....)!

In WA state there's no requirement to place a number on the boat's hull if it is documented. A documented boat in WA state is not exempt from a WA state registration fee however. CA presumably gives you a break because of your high income taxes.

A large part of the WA state annual registration fee is calculated as a Vessel excise tax of 0.5% of taxable value of vessel ($5 minimum ).

Question: Who or what determines the "taxable value" ?

Is it market value or assessed value much like for WA state house property value ?

Well, now that I can enquire about my renewal fee I find that 2009 vs. 2010 my registration fee has reduced by $101 and a few cents. 😱
