replacing a Pro Mariner true power combi 2500 qs

the charger/inverter on our R29S has died. What do you recommend for a replacement?

When mine dies, I'll be replacing with a Kisae true/pure sine wave inverter charger. The Kisae can be programed so that it does not automatically switch to inverter mode when you lose shore power.

You will see multiple strings on this. the ProMariners that are in our 29's had a lot of problems. They have been discontinued by the manufacturer. Mine died more than a year ago and I managed to locate a used one for the short term. But on advice of others on this site I replaced it a few months ago with a Xantrex Freedom 2000 XC. It fits right in the same spot and uses the same wire connection to the controller in the quarter berth. You may have to modify the mounting of the controller. And you can buy the bluetooth controller for it as well, which is nice (we did not do this). Keeping the used as a spare, at least until I sell the boat.

I have always been pleased that we had a separate charger and inverter right from the factory. Both KISAE and both excellent. Something to consider.

I just replaced mine with the Kisae Abso 2000w pure sine. Love it so far. Easy swap.

The ProMariner in my 31S failed last year at a very inconvenient time (imagine that) and I had no choice but to go with what West Marine had on the shelf, a MasterVolt 12V/2000W/100A inverter/charger. Easy install and satisfied with the performance so far, but at the time I did not have the luxury of comparing features on other units. I had Xantrex (or Heart Interface) on 2 previous vessels and was completely satisfied, would probably start there if I decide to replace this unit.

Our Promariner died recently because someone jostled the shore power cord when I had inadvertently left the water heater on. We decided to install a separate battery charger and skip the Inverter (which we almost never use). If we need AC at anchor, say to grind coffee, we have a small portable inverter unit that plugs into a cigarette lighter. If the next owners want to use the microwave, etc. at anchor, they can add a separate Inverter. Meanwhile, no more worrying that we'll lose shore power in the middle of the night in winter, when it's below freezing and blowing a gale, because we've left a light bulb and Air Dryers on to keep the boat from freezing.

BTW, this last post is precisely why we preemptively replaced the ProMariner. On several occasions in the past, we lost power at the dock. If you had anything drawing AC in the boat--such as a dehumidifier or heater--it would automatically turn on the inverter until your batteries were flat. the Xantrex (and others I am sure) allows us to turn off the inverter when leave the boat, insuring that this does not happen. The cost of the Xantrex (about one boat buck) will pay for itself in extended battery life, which is why we replaced it before the second ProMariner conked out.
