I was wondering if anyone has replaced the factory supplied Lewmar windlass with something else and if so any related comments. I had to replace the motor in ours a couple of seasons back and now it's acting like the bearings are failing. This go around I'm pretty sure it won't be cost effective to repair so am considering whether to replace in kind or with something different.

Couple of years ago mine failed. When I opened it up it was full of salt. I replaced the entire unit with another Lewmar. The new one has a better seal on the casing. Do an extensive online search for best prices.
There is a pic of the corrosion on page 3 in my photo album.

Thanks for the reply, Brian. The simple thing to do is to look for the best price and simply replace it in kind. Which is likely where I'll end up simply to avoid drilling any additional holes etc. But I'm giving some thought to the Maxwell HRC-FF. In load testing it retrieves line much closer to its stated rate than the Lewmar. And from a safety standpoint I like the gypsy being shrouded. If the mounting holes don't require much alteration I may go that route. I was hoping someone else had already plowed that field 😀

A friend of mine has a windless that doesn't retrieve chain, might keep that in mind.

I replaced mine this past spring. Same as Brian, salt buildup ruined the gear shaft. Although it was functional it was making a lot of noise and it was only time before it was probably a dead soldier. It looks like the newer models have a rubber gasket to prevent the infiltration. I went with the Lewmar and will keep my fingers crossed.

Has anyone replaced the Lewmar with a drum winch? It may not look as nice but it sure seems a lot more robust.

I've looked into the drums. With such an undersized/poorly designed anchor locker I thought a drum would solve that problem. They look good but don't hold enough line for my boating area. Unless you get a huge one sized for a boat twice as big. If I was on the east coast and could get away with less rode I'd probably go that route.

I have a large drum winch “Lone Star G3” on my 21EC. Works a treat. The G3 (similar to GX3) will handle a boat 29-30 feet so lots of safety, power and more rope than I have ever used. Never a problem. All 316 SS and together with SS Rocna anchor looks great. I use it every time I take the boat out.
