My Yanmar maintenance calls for replacing the turbocharger's heat shield every 250 hrs or one year. This is for 4BY2-150 engine. I've examined the shield and for the life of me see no reason to do this.

What have others done?

I had the same question so I had a mechanic from a Yanmar dealership come to my boat and examine the shield. He examined the outside of it and said he saw no reason to change it at this time. I suppose it could be different on different boats.

If it works, don't fix it.

Thanks for that bit of advice... LOL

Sure... but how do you know if it's working ? The shield is supposed to protect the surroundings from the turbo which on my recent Volvo S60R's engine glowed red at times.

How is the turbo assembly cooled ? Coolant, raw water, oil etc ? I suspect water is used to cool and lubricate.

Under the heat shield there's some form of heat insulation and I wonder if it's this material that needs to be checked and replaced periodically ?????

The material under the metal is what needs to be replaced and checked. It is my understanding that the turbo is oil cooled. Does the metal around it seem discolored from heat? This would be an indication that the interior insulation is not doing it's job.

Mike: Thanks for confirming my suspicion that it's the material under the shiny metal casing that needs to be examined and replaced as needed. My heat shield metal shows no sign of discoloration at this time. 🙂
