We are looking to do some long-distance crusing and eventually the Great Loop. What advice can folks give us on the best digny and davit system to have the dink on the swim platform. I do not have the confidence to DYI so we would have to find someone to help out the installation, etc. Thoughts?

We have weaver Davits and an old Ranger 8 ft hard dingy. On the dingy side loops we bent them 90° so the dingy will float while still attached to swim step. When pulled up use two cargo straps to the tow eyes on the rear of the hull from the top gunnel, and the dingy leans on the rear pulpit.
Often when anchored will drop the dingy using the davits as a hinge so we can enjoy the view from the cockpit.

What kind of dinghy, hard or inflatable?

We have Weaver davits with an inflatable dinghy and really like the setup. The dinghy stays attached to the swim platform while I install the outboard. There are two rods that hold the dinghy upright while traveling down the road. It was factory installed and is very easy to use.

Are your davits the weaver 4" up and 4" out?

I wrestled with this for quite a while in determining the best set up for my C 28. In the end, I concluded the factory had it right. I use the weaver davits with the fluid motion designed 4 inch up and 4 inch out bracket. Works very well, although I did add a pulley to make it easier to pull the dingy upright. I wonld up doing the install myself as I couldn't find anyone to do it. It's actually fairly easy to do.

I tried roll up dingy. Too inconvenient. Tried the harbor men setup, which looks like a big net. Caught sea weed like crazy. Just tying on with rope was a real pain.

Here's a picture of the pulley setup. Very easy and provides about a two to one gain. Pully must be one the dingy side. I have a Highfield Ultra Lite 240.

Martin- This is really helpful so thank you! I have fears that we will not be able to find someong to do the labor and I am not as confident that I have the skills to do the job but then again my wife and partner is rather handy so perhaps between the two of us.....

I had trouble with Weaver 4/4 offset setup (older C26): dinghy dragging in the water at displacement speeds; swimgrid obstruction by standoff rods; impossible to accommodate kicker. Replaced with a precisely tailored Seawise system (manual winch, I want dinghy launch to be independent of power systems, gravity doesn't fail).

We have an AB 9UL aluminum RIB mounted on the special Ranger Tug model of the Weaver davits. The combo has worked quite well for us. When leaving the Tug, I drop the dinghy and load the passengers before unattaching the davits, due to minimal dinghy motion. When we return to the Tug, I pull the dinghy along side the swim platform and step onto the swim step, holding the dinghy tight with one foot. I reattach the davits to the dinghy before letting passengers disembark. I can pull the dinghy upright on its side without assistance, but it is a hard pull. I also made a two-part tackle that attaches to the Bimini top frame that makes the lift easy, but takes more time to set up. Beware not to let the stainless steel yokes on the dinghy rub on the Tug's gel coat or you will find a lot of scratches in your gel coat if the yokes protrude past the side of the dinghy.

Weavers. Make sure you get the ones for the Ranger Tugs. did the Great Loop 23/24 and no issues in 6,400 n/m's. And easy DIY project. Lots of Youtube videos. Key is to glue the pads on the inflatable in a low humidity environment and follow curing instructions to the letter.

Times two. Additionally, please make sure to use the two part adhesive appropriate for your dingy, either PVC or hypalon. The single part adhesive isn't strong enough.
