There have been some previous discussions of having oil samples analyzed during changes and I decided to try it when I changed my reverse gear oil for the first time recently. In case anyone is interested, I linked a copy of the report I received (it feels like I'm sharing my blood work results...). My service protocol for reverse gear specifies to change the oil at 100 hours so I was only slightly early, but the break in results look good. I wasn't sure I would see a lot of benefit from doing it initially, but now that I see the report, I think oil analysis is potentially a good tool for catching potential issues early and it provides some immediate peace of mind that nothing is going off the rails. I know there are other labs out there, but my limited experience with Blackstone has been very good. They will send sample kits for free and only charge your account when they complete the analysis ($28 for standard sampling, more if you want to try to extend change intervals which I don't). Getting the oil volume they needed during the pump out process was tricky, so I am planning to get a sample pump to make things easier for the engine and reverse gear collections in the future.

I've been using Blackstone labs for the past 7 years. After all if we go to the doctor and get a blood test, why not the boat. The zinc and phosphorus is really crucial to protect agains wear in the engine. However most of the car manufacturers have moved away from the higher amounts due to the catalytic converters. Even the motorcyle guys will use rotella in their bikes as it still has the higher amounts. Its great to see the reports each year and know where your engine is at. I would recommend having the engine tested every year.
