Reverse gear

Which engine do you have? Based on your question I'd be willing to bet it is a Volvo. I have a D4-300 and found myself quite confused by the maintenance manual with respect to the Reverse Gear, including the reference to "Oil Och Filter Change". Anyone know what "Och" means?

After re-reading the maintenance schedule a bunch of times, I have concluded that there is no need to change the fluid in the reverse gear according to any set schedule. The only routine maintenance listed is to clean the Reverse Gear filter every 200 hours. I am choosing to simply replace the Reverse Gear filter every 200 hours (which requires topping off the fluid a bit).

However, I would feel better if someone from the Factory would confirm that this is the right interpretation of the Volvo Penta D4 manual.

Cheep insurance, I change the oil when I change the filter. Only takes a few minutes more and the cost is minimal. Never had a problem with changing to often.
Just my .02

According to the VOLVO D3 maintenance schedule the reverse gear oil and filter should be changed every 200 hours or 12 months. Easy to do. The cost is about $58 for filter and less than 3 quarts of transmission fluid.

Allan,

I would change the oil and filter every 200hrs or 12 months. Also another idea would be to change both engine oil/filter and reverse gear oil/filter as well. It never hurts to service the fluids once a year but that’s just me, some may say that’s too much but I would rather spend the little extra to ensure fresh fluids. Let me know if you have questions.

Thank you,
Kevin Lamont

Sounds like great advice and worth the minor hassle. Thanks for the feedback everyone.

This will be the first oil and filter change for the D4 300 "reverse gear" on my R31. Anyone help me with the filter designation and where to procure same?

A good first check is to call Richard, who is the parts guy at Ranger Tug. If it isn't anything he stocks, then I think your options are to go to a local Volvo authorized dealer for the diesel engines, or go online. There are a few different companies that seem to sell parts online. I haven't needed to the online route on anything, but if I were to buy online, I would start with Pacific Power Group. If my understanding is correct, they are who the factory works with. Here's a link to their website: https://www.pacificpowergroup.com/v...MI7JTy1K7s4AIV9B-tBh2htA7ZEAAYASAAEgLRD_D_BwE

I purchase all my Volvo Parts online using http://www.volvopentastore.com It is Volvos official online store. It is actually iboats online parts. It normally takes 3 to 4 days to get parts after ordering.

I called Richard at the factory; very responsive and very helpful! Thanks, all.
