I am considering a new 21 - EC. I have searched several websites trying to find reviews on the 21EC, found very little except two owner reviews. I am interested in handling when the weather roughs up. All the videos I have seen, show calm water conditions.
I have found nothing on the anchor and rode. What type, size chain, size rode, length capacity in the locker etc. Have not found any pictures regarding the anchor locker, cleat, etc.

Thank you.
Martin Bridges.

Martin,
I have had a R21EC for 1.5 years now and love her. I got most of the options for the 21 and a couple they don't list. The boat handles great in all weather that I have subjected her to. I prefer to run her in calm seas. Two to three foot seas are acceptable for most of what I do. The boat can turn on a dime and leave nine cents change, which means she can turn very quickly to handle changing seas. I have been in four to six foot seas and had to quarter in to them. I worked those four to six foot seas for six hours getting home, and while I had to work at it, she handled them fine. She handles great around the dock and I seldom have to use the bow thruster. She tracks fine at all speeds. If you will be cruising a lot in four foot and higher seas, I would recommend getting a R25 or larger boat.

The anchor and rode that comes with the boat are sufficient. I have anchored while fishing many times, and have anchored overnight a couple of times and did not have any problems. I have not anchored in rough weather yet.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hi Rick,
Thank you very much for your reply to my Qs on rough weather and anchors. That was my first posting and this is my first reply. Hope I have got it right.
You have put my mind at rest regarding a bit of "roughers" (I used to be in the Navy). I live on Vancouver Island in the PNW. Most of my boating will be Gulf Islands and Desolation Sound. Crossing the Georgia Straight when there is a chop running is always a concern. But it seems the R21-EC can handle it. I do not want to go for a bigger boat. I prefer the ease of trailering a 21EC.
Happy Boating.
Martin.

Have any 21-EC owners run out of water either by design or accident? How did the boat do lying on it's side? Did the returning water get over the freeboard? Any damage?

Martin.

Hi Martin - I don't have a 21, but you can download this PDF and get fairly complete specifications, including the factory optional anchor package.

We have followed the adventures of many 21 owners, both here on Tugnuts, and at our all three of our rendezvous (just got home). I'd recommend your read John's account of his trip to the Broughtons on 21-EC Port Nut with sister ship Red Current, as well as this article (PDF) about the 3 R-21's who went to Alaska.

Cheers,

Bruce
