This will be our first get together at Roche Harbor and we are really looking forward to it, especially meeting up with and learning from fellow Tug Nuts. With so many attending it occurred to me that finding someone with specific modifications or solutions might be difficult and with that in mind I thought this topic could help make contacts. I, for example, would like to meet someone who has installed the dominant GHS 10 extension to their radio. It would be interesting to see how they arrange the wiring and mounting and to get some first-hand input as to how useful this addition had proven. I would also like to meet up with someone who has solved the problem of "hammering" or rapid pulsing in their water system.

If there are any Tug Nuts attending Roche Harbor who could help me out with these points perhaps they would like to drop a p.m.?

On my new R-27/OB during the 1-day systems training I/we came across the noisy "hammering" / "pulsing" aspect. It was the worse for the head sink. When turning sink water ON you not only have to make sure the shower head is not engaged :lol: (my grandson and 1st Mate were quite annoyed when they wanted sink water only to be greeted with a shot of water directed at their body/faces) when turning the water flow on, and the hammering/pulsing was very annoying. I chatted with the RT's systems trainer about this and our thoughts were to insulate the red/blue PEX lines from each other by wrapping them with some form of thick tape and padding. The PEX lines are so rigid that they can vibrate annoyingly with water flow and if two of them are in contact with each other (as they are under the head sink's cabinet, as well as resting on the cabinet rear cutout) the noise is made worse, and I mean annoyingly worse.

The pulsing is something I have to think about as surely this is a function of how the water pump is designed for forcing/pushing water through the piping to where it's being demanded.

My R-27/OB is going back the the factory next week to have some changes made to it and this hammering/pulsing is one of the items for RT to think about and hopefully resolve.

On my R-25 (Classic) I vaguely recall the pulsing but not the hammering aspect.

At Roche it could be that a cork board be erected somewhere that people can post certain mods they're are interested in along with their boat name and owner name in the hope that others when viewing the notes can respond. Just an idea... 🙂

Consider installing an accumulator tank - it will even out the pulses from the water pump.

I have installed a Rite Fill flow meter in the raw water line leading to the head that measures/records gallons sent to the head for flushing. If any one is interested I'll show it at Roche.

We don't have a problem with this if someone wants to put the board together. I might even have an extra white board if that would work. Baz - would you be interested in setting it up and overseeing it? Or, what about a modification forum? Jeff C. suggested this to us a while back but I couldn't get it together in time. If someone was willing to host or be the MC, the group could probably meet in the tent on the lawn. thoughts?

We also have the Ranger Tug/Cutwater crawl. That is the little sign that you put in the window that basically says "Yes, welcome aboard" or "Not now". This is a good way to see what others have done but may not be the most direct approach when searching for technical modifications.

The board can be used to ask for responses/replies from other RT owner on a particular mod a person is interested in. People can also place their Name & Boat-name and list some primary mods they've made so that others with an interest in them can make contact and get to see them.

This White Board idea is simple and is a good starting point and it will be interesting to see how it works out.

Good advice! We need to have a spot for that on the whiteboard. We will have a contact list at the rendezvous but it will not have slip numbers.

On our R-27, Toucan, we installed an accumulator tank next to the water heater. It was a simple install and eliminated the pulsing in the water flow. Our tank came with metric PEX fittings. The boat uses a nearly similar sized US PEX tubing.

We also installed a Garmin GHS 10 microphone on the dashboard, a simple install.

We will be at the Roche Harbor Rendezvous. All are welcome to come by for a look at these additions.

Today when out on my new 2018 R-27/OB I used the sink's faucet and the head sink's faucet and found the previous pulsing I had when the boat was first delivered to me had vanished. I'm now wondering what if anything was done to affect this when my boat was at the RT factory in Kent last week. When the boat was returned to me I was told RT was thinking about using 'a 'smart' pump to resolve pulsing and the resultant PEX pipe vibrations... but so far it's been only talk and no action by RT at this time. I wonder if they sneaked a 'smart' pump onto my boat and simply forgot to tell me. :lol: Anyhow, I currently have no pulsing nor any PEX pipe vibrations as I did when the boat was first delivered to me. I will make enquiries about this at the Rondy (the Roche GTG 😉 ).

Today I zip tied the hot and cold water lines off of areas where the lines were laying on or against something. I did this by the water pump (on an R29S), under the galley sink and down as far into the cavity below the floor panels under the galley sink and under the head sink. The only place I could not get to were the lines the disappear into the wall in the head and under the saloon floor. This made an appreciable difference in reducing the hammering noise the hoses were making. Interested to learn about the pulsating water solution.

I was just about the start a new thread about water hammering/pulsating and found this one via a search. I have the same issue on my 2017 Cutwater 28 and I would love to resolve it somehow. My previous boat, a Sea Ray, had super smooth water flow regardless of how much you opened a faucet. Quite the opposite on my C28. I barely turn the faucet on and the hammering starts and spurts of water come flying out. It smooths out slightly when you open it all the way, but the spurting still happens and the hammering in quite loud. Doesn't matter what faucet I use, it happens on all of them.

I am also very interesting to hear what Barry's solution ended up being. Did the factory install a different pump?

Just a follow up to the great input I received in Roche.

First thanks to Barry who showed me the accumulator installation. I went ahead and installed the Shurflo unit. My local yacht shop recommended that one over the Jabsco even though it was a tad more expensive. (I wasn't buying from him so no conflict of interest.) This was a really great mod.! The water flow has smoothed out and the pump is cycling nicely rather than being forced into a rapid chatter mode.

Second to Curt who showed me the GHS10 installation with the small block of wood addition to angle the handset slightly toward me at the helm. This handset change is great. I can see and control what is going on with the radio but also hear better.

Both mods. can be seen in our album. There is also a picture showing the overflow sump. This came up from a couple of people. As the HW tank heats up, either from heater or engine, the contents expand and have to relieve somewhere. (You can leave water pressure switched off and a faucet open as the HW tank heats up but I usually forget, or forget to close the faucet before I turn on water pressure.) Absent any other route the pressure relief valve will let about a cup or so of water escape. Once the water is hot then this will obviously stop. My issue was that this cup of water flowed through the locker (wetting contents) to the transducer location and then back through the drain hole under the locker bottom to the next drain hole down into the bilge. This latter hole is above the hull bottom on our boat so about 1.1/2 liters would accumulate before it drained. I hate resting water even though it is under the locker floor and I didn't like the idea of the water system reaching the 6 bar relief point of the tank. I simply took a clear tube off the PR valve and into a plastic box which acts as a sump. I know have to remember to empty that sump every 4 or 5 trips but I seem to be good at that.

Did you install the smaller poly one or the larger stainless steel one?
