One thing that we want to do more of is sleep at anchor. We have only anchored a few times and always just for brief periods during the day. I’d like to reduce our “marina hopping” and spend more time away at anchor.

I know that there are skills we will need to perfect, and strategies to learn, but having confidence in the anchor is a big part of being able to sleep at night. The OEM Bruce seems “ok”.

I see people put the Rocna 10 on R27s as an upgrade. Why not the 15? Is it too big? Bigger is better with anchors, no?

We have a Rocna 15 on our R27 Classic. Bigger is better as long as it will fit and the Windlass can handle it. It fits on our boat without modification and the windlass has no problem pulling it up. We have been all the way to Glacier Bay and back anchoring over 40 times and have never had it drag. I recommend the 15 if it will fit on your boat.

I have the Rocna10 on my R27-OB. It works great. No issues. The boat came with 50' of 5/16 HT chain. That's about 50lbs of chain on a 22 lbs anchor for a 27 foot boat.

I have a Mantus anchor with my R29 and have used it for 5 years to anchor without any issues. Mantus is similar to Rocna with a roll bar. For peace of mind, I recommend getting an anchor alarm app for your phone so that you can monitor all night without needing to leave your Chartplotter on.

Many thanks @Red Raven, Martin and @Dcsqatar.

Yes I’ve got two anchor alarms on my phone. Definitely a must have and they’ll save power versus the chartplotter too.

I think that Martin is saying that the extra 11lbs on the anchor is not a meaningful addition when considered in total with the chain - 72lbs in total with the Rocna 10 and 83lbs with the 15. For the extra $100 bucks, if the Rocna 15 fits and the windless can manage it, maybe the worst part is spending a potentially unnecessary $100?

Id like to see if I can find someone who has put a Rocna 15 on one of the R27 OBs; given Red has one on his R27 inboard, it probably fits, but I dont know how the hardware relates between the two boats. My fear is that it wont fit the new boats. Is the windless in the R27OB the same thats in the R29? Anyone know?

The bow roller is different between the boats. I believe the windlass is the same on the R27-OB as the R29, but the bow roller setup is different on each model.
I've not seen a Rocna15 on the front of a R27-OB, they mostly all run Rocna10's if they'e upgraded from the Lewmar Claw.

I spent 2 nights at anchor in Glacier Bay, Blue Mouse Cove, in 75 feet of water, Rocna10 + 50' of 5/16 HT chain, and 200' of 8 plait rode. +22ft/day of tide swing, and 15 knots of wind through the anchorage (we were waiting out weather as it was 25 knot winds through Glacier Bay)). I let out all 250' of rode. We spun around with wind and tides. We held solid. No issues.

Some other good anchoring pic's from Glacier Bay.

Lemondrop, a R27-OB, has a Rocna10, 100ft of chain, and 200ft of rode.
Personally, I don't think the extra 50' of chain she added matters.

I run a bridle for all my overnight anchoring also.

I often will turn on Navionics and set it to "track" the route while at anchor. My anchor drag alarm (built into my Vesper XB-8000 AIS unit) also tracks the boat's movement while at anchor.

Lol, 280' swing! Try that anywhere a bit busier!

And only a 3:1 scope too.

A look at AIS showed that I only had 1 other boat nearby... Lemondrop! (nobody else was within 14nm of us. We had plenty of room Lol).
Here's a screen shot of my track at anchor after 2 nights.

In Lowe Inlet (Varney Falls), in British Columbia, about 60nm south of Prince Rupert, we anchored in 95 feet of water with 18' tide swings.

I am happy with a Vulcan 12 on my 27OB.

Here is a pic of the Vulcan on our 27.

ditto on the vulcan, our vulcan 9 is like a dagger and has held 4 boats without dragging.

Many thanks @Rebel112r and @sfladgard for the info on the vulcans. I’m going to pull the chute on the first good deal on a R10 or V9/12 I find.

Closing the loop on this.

Picked up a Rocna 10, Mantus bridle, Mantus anchor guard and Mantis snubber.
Life on the hook is getting amped up!

Thanks to everyone for the valuable advice along the way.
