Rocna Anchors

Sorry but one more question. I am assuming the Rocha Original with the roll bar will work with roller and safety latch? Is this correct?

Also get the mantus anchor guard for the R31. It will keep the tip of the Rocna from digging in on the plastic bow protector.

Yes the Rocna original with the roll bar fits a 31. The safety latch is not usable with a Rocna. I have a line with a quick clip on it that snaps onto a chain link and then cleat it to the cleat ear of the windlass for my safety.

The Rockna most likely won’t work with the bail on the bow roller.

Tie some line, something small, to the anchor and secure it to the cleat next to the windlass to act as a bail.

On our 2015 R25sc, the Rocna 15 works with the bail on the bow roller just fine. We also added the Mantus swivel and did not have to modify anything on the boat. It all fits just fine and works as well as the original anchor.
I would add a photo from my album, but that does not seem possible any more...that function has not worked for quite a while....

The bail works fine on our 2011 R-27 Classic, too (with a Rocna 10) although we did have to extend the bow roller (to pre-existing holes) to accommodate the Mantus swivel.

The Rocna was one of our first upgrades on the R-31. I sailed with a Bruce for many years in the PNW, but I think the factory anchor is a wee bit undersized especially for short-scope anchorages, and my co-owners were anchoring novices. We've been happy with it.

I have never found the need for a swivel and literally every bone in my 35+ years of boating experience body says do not get one. Talk to any of the old salt Caribbean cruisers and they'll tell you that a swivel is a great way to lose your boat. The Mantus swivel may be the only exception, so if you see "swivel" settle for nothing less than Mantus.

That said, I've found that the ability of Rocna (and even Bruce/Lewmar Bruce knockoff) anchors to hold and re-plant in Northwest anchorages to obviate the need for a swivel. I think it provides peace of mind more than anything practical.

Remember that if you are going with the Mantus swivel, inspect it at least annually as you do with your chain, with a quick inspect every time you pull up from anchor. The breaking strength of the Mantus is based on factory-new condition, any swivel (even an over-engineered one like the Mantus) won't take a beating quite as well as chain does. And the swivel is at the "beating" end of your anchoring apparatus. Over time it might become the weakest link in your setup, even if it isn't at first.

And don't skimp on the safety wiring / mousing all shackles. If you do a casual inspection in a random marina, you might be surprised by the number of shackles that are improperly fastened.

Very good info. Thanks to all of you, again.

This is just a follow up. I bought a Rocna 15 and got a new one for a deal. I will need the Mantus anchor guard, however.
The latch will not work with this anchor so I will use a short safety line as suggested. Thanks to you all. I feel better now. I also got the Mantus snubber and bridal so no more noisy nights and chafed anchor line.

I purchased the Rocna 15, a Mantus anchor guard, and a Mantus snubber. All work great. No more chafing, noice, drifting, etc.

I finally got the Rocna 15 with a Mantus snubber and anchor guard and they work perfectly. Thanks to all.
